Hi.

My Acer Aspire has a problem when I switch it on, it lights up for 5 seconds then goes off. The screen backlight comes on but the laptop shuts down before anything is displayed.

I've tried resetting the bios by removing the BIOS battery and laptop battery in case the Bios had frozen (no difference)

Tried a new charger (no difference)

Tried reprogramming the bios (no difference)

19v is passing through the first 2 mosfets onto the main power rail no problem.

Board number - FH5LI-LA-J801P Rev:1.0

Has anyone got any more ideas I can try?

Thanks  :cowboy:

Hi, Welcome to BC.

Seems is not a uncommon issue.  Possible bad BIOS.  Person here : https://www.badcaps.net/forum/troubleshooting-hardware-devices-and-electronics-theory/troubleshooting-laptops-tablets-and-mobile-devices/bios-requests-only/87139-fh5li-la-j8001p-rev-1-0-bios-request    requested and someone wrote a new Bios for them, need to make account to see if it is still on the server if wishing to go that way.

Using the M/B to identify your Product is not that helpful.   The actual Model info would provide more reliable information.

Ok so I have found more out.

The USB power is not working. No power coming into the caps associated with the USB and obviously no power coming out of the 2 USB sockets. I would imagine that is why the laptop comes on then goes off.

What should I do next?

I'm in the middle of learning about motherboard repairs so I should be able to follow instructions :)

Hi, I would 1st try to get anything of value to you off the system.

This can be done with Linux installed to a USB from another computer.  As Linux will by-pass any password stuff may have or security settings.

Or can use : https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/bootable-windows-pe-based-recovery-discs/ and there are tools on some of them.

Or can try using a Windows ??? as you have not mentioned what you are running to make from another computer Install/recover disks/USB.

Win10 : https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software-download/windows10

Win11 : https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows11

How to : https://www.system-rescue.org/Installing-SystemRescue-on-a-USB-memory-stick/

&

https://www.minitool.com/backup-tips/windows-10-recovery-usb-for-another-pc.html

If nothing works to get BIOS up and running during a Boot with one of the above then the SSD or HDD has issues and or you have other Hardware Problems.

Let us know how you are making out.

Ok so have found more out which I think is very important.

There is no 3v anywhere on the board. The BIOS battery is pumping out 3.1V to the board, but its not getting to the BIOS chip! The BIOS chip pin 8 is supposed to have permanent 3v.

The only other place I'm getting 3.3V is from the Super IO Chip, but it's not getting to anywhere else. Does this mean my IO chip is ok or faulty?
