Hi,

The above computer has 3GB factory (a long time ago) RAM in 2 slots. It's got Intel core i3-380m and a 500GB HDD.

I'm having problems sourcing an 8GB DRAM upgrade and frankly I am now running around in circles wasting over a day in lost time.

The CRUCIAL scanner told me that I need this Crucial RAM CT2KIT51264BF160BJ 8Go Kit (2x4Go) DDR3 1600 MHz CL11   -    Pin Count = 204-pin, PC Speed = PC3-12800, and calls to Crucial in the UK and France have resulted in them insisting that the pack is compatible with my pc.

However, no matter the configuration I insert them, the computer will not boot and I get a message "preparing automatic repair" followed by a muti coloured screen of thin vertical lines.

ACER no longer support the computer, so no information, but via their forum a user has kindly given these specs as supported by the 5742:

DIMM type:      DDR3  800/1066/1333 Mhz

DIMM speed                 800/1066 Mhz  SDRAM

DIMM voltage               +1.5v

DIMM package             204 pin DDR3  SO-DIMM

To my untrained eye the Crucial speed of 1600 Mhz is probably the problem.

Could someone kindly confirm and if not advise of a solution.

TIA

Regards,

Got into the BIOS and set up a lower RAM speed and then restarted?
