Machine:  Acer  5315

OS:  Win 7

Since a couple weeks ago, wireless internet connection acts like it is not connected.  Pings through command line go through.  I tested with an external USB wireless modem--all good.  I then bought and replaced the internal wireless modem.  It then worked faster than the USB modem, but....for only about an hour, and now it behaves just like the previous.   I don't know what is going on.  Any ideas?  Thanks.

Hi, actually WIn 7 should not be going out on the internet as it is a danger to everyone and to your friends and family as it is unsupported OS that has reached it's time.

Should have bought a USB Dongle.

From a Command Prompt Admin run SFC /SCANNOW see if fixes anything after a reboot.

It amounts to the age of your system and the amount of data your card was made for.

That being said Acer does not even support your system as there is no drivers available for it.

You can since no other way to get a driver use a 3rd party App though that also has it's issues to be considered.

Should be running Linux Mint Cinnamon Edition : https://linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=299  Most like Windows. : https://www.linuxmint.com/rel_vera_cinnamon_whatsnew.php

FAQ's plus Minimum Requirements : https://linuxmint.com/faq.php

Less Command Line stuff than others. Check out the videos : https://www.google.com/search?q=linux+mint+cinnamon&client=firefox-b-d&source=lnms&tbm=vid&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjzu4eQ-8L8AhViAzQIHSZ2D8oQ_AUoAnoECAEQBA&biw=1536&bih=671&dpr=1.25

It Comes with Software as well there is tons of Software available : Open Source : https://alternativeto.net/platform/linux/?license=opensource check free and ....

This is your best option and should consider it after what has been mentioned to you about Win 7.

Thank-you, for your response.

"Hi, actually WIn 7 should not be going out on the internet as it is a danger to everyone and to your friends and family as it is unsupported OS that has reached it's time."

--No offense, but I do not believe or agree with that at all, so we can ignore that.  Nothing will happen.  It is just a scare tactic that's all about money.  7 has until the same time as 10 until things start to quit working (websites, etc.).

I do system file checks regularly, so that is not it.

"That being said Acer does not even support your system as there is no drivers available for it."

--I have found all the drivers fine.

"It amounts to the age of your system and the amount of data your card was made for."

--As I said, I have tried a new card.  It worked for an hour and then did the same.

LInux Mint

--YES!  I am already moving toward that to be ready before or at the end of Win10.

Pings through command line go through.

Then Internet should work. Anything wrong with your DNS selection?  How about showing us your drivers and logs as often asked in this forum, to have more clues?

PS: About Win7, use a good anti-malware.  That's what I do. :cherry:

Thanks, for your response.

As far as the pings going through, yes, I agree, internet is "working" but it is extremely slow...too slow to even load a website.  The pings will go through, but not much else.

DNS settings are set to automatic for both a) the internal modem, which it, or something related to it, is having a problem, and b ) the external modem which is working better than fine.

I'm not sure what logs you mean.  There are no error messages, if that is what you mean.

You could run the free diagnostic tools as detailed by Pkshadow:

When you talk about a wireless modem are you referring to a WiFi connection, in which you connect to a wireless router in your home, or are you talking about a cellular modem, which connects to a mobile network (in the same way a mobile phone does) which you can use anywhere you can get a mobile signal?  I'm not trying to be pedantic, as both are possible setups.

The former is more common, and in this case the Modem will not be in the laptop but built into or directly physically connected to the wireless router.

Assuming you are using a WiFi connection and not a cellular modem, do you have any other devices which connect wirelessly to the same router, like another computer, a phone, tablet, or Smart TV and are these working properly?  If you right click the network icon in the system tray on your laptop and choose properties, does it give any information about the connection quality?  I haven't got a working W7 system any more but from memory, it shows the WiFi signal strength of your connection, and choosing the "properties" of the connection gives the link speed.

No, it is not the router.  It is the wireless modem inside the laptop.  The 2nd device I used to test this is an external USB wireless modem, which works fine or better.

ray5450, you can run any diagnostic tools you want. The more info we collectively have, better are your chances to fix this.  Also, keep in mind that you have Win7.  There are no guaranties.

About slow Internet, I experienced that when some remote computer/server were offline, causing numerous timeouts.

Another thing you can test is going to a coffee shop with WiFi, and test your connection speed.  And yet another test, you can try an old-school Ethernet cable at home instead of WiFi.

Good luck!

If you haven't try resetting TCP/IP protocol suite with attached batch script to see problem resolves.

"you can run any diagnostic tools you want"

--I am familiar with these tools.  They will list all devices, memory, cpu, software, error logs.

As to this modem, I have had the same devices, the same memory, the same cpu, the same software for years.  There have been no errors that occurred.

I looked inside your batch file.  I have tried most or all of those commands, but I tried your file anyway, in case the order matters, but there is no change.  The next thing I will try is to completely uninstall the driver, and then reinstall it, and post if that worked.

After reinstall, it worked good for about 15 minutes and then disconnected me.  It was difficult to get it reconnected.  The connection kept disappearing from the list of connections.  When it finally connected, it was slow, slow/stuttering...sites hardly load.  I then switched to the other wireless modem, and all good.  After a few minutes, I switched back:  slow, slow, stuttering.  I switched back to external, all good for several hours.  I switched back to internal...slow, slow stuttering.  (?)
