I found this article and it looks like the old saying that opposites attract may not be true.

Forget the proverbial wisdom: Opposites don’t really attract, study finds: https://arstechnica.com/science/2024/01/forget-the-proverbial-wisdom-opposites-dont-really-attract-study-finds/

But guess that's kinda obvious that opposites don't necessarily attract.

At a Glance. The idea that we are drawn to our opposites is mostly a myth. Sure, it does happen, but most people are attracted to people they share things in common with—and research suggests that similarity is what makes for a satisfying, lasting relationship.

My wife and I are polar opposites and we've been married for 19 years. She's an extrovert and I'm an introvert she's more liberal than I am as well.

My wife and I are very similar.
In contrast, my daughter and her partner are at the antipodes.
And in fact we still do not understand her choice..........

Both my wife and I are LEO's and everyone was afraid our marriage wouldn't last..   How wrong they are, 53 years this week.  This is a case where two of the same are not supposed to attract and the result would be mayhem.  SO wrong.

I think that differences that are minute and aren't super-important, won't harm a relationship too badly.  Things like how one person likes spicy food but the other doesn't, or how one is a night owl and the other an early bird, or one likes to stay home and the other goes out all the time...etc.  These aren't major issues.

But if you have fundamental differences that cannot be compromised on, that's when they start to threaten a relationship.  But the thing is that different people have different ideas of what constitute fundamental differences..  This makes it even more complicated.

Actually they are very important issues and clearly demonstrate why the couple is not compatible

one person likes spicy food but the other doesn't,

If I like spicy food and my wife hates it that means we have to compromise or cook 2 meals.

or how one is a night owl and the other an early bird

If one person is a night owl and the other isn't, It could mean they don't like spending time together.EG... " you are always asleep we never do things together. " Its like doing shift work, ask any cop, fireman, paramedic etc that works night shift how that works out.

or one likes to stay home and the other goes out all the time

Why are you always going out? who are you seeing, an I not good enough to spend you time with??

If a husband or wife is going out all the time while the spouse stays home then there is a very serious problem in that marriage.

Those are just examples, Nick.  I won't go into further details because they are not the main point of my argument.  Rather my point is that opposites only attract when the differences aren't very significant.

Those counter-examples you mentioned can indeed be very serious, but only if the people involved find them so.   For example, you may think having to cook two different kinds of meals to suit the couple's different palates is a major issue, but some people don't sweat over it.

My wife and I vastly different both politically and social wise. I've been married for 19 years and a majority of that was 12 shift work and mission critical and that work was rotating.

My wife and I also live different spice levels so I cook for her, and add more spice to my serving so cooking two meals in my opinion is not a compromise.

But Dan

You also spend $80 on a " small  " bag of groceries.

And as usual you always seem to be the exception to the rule. there are fr far more people that do 12 hour mission critical jobs that are divorced than not. but of course everybody you know is still happily married after 500 years or something.

I know many still working 12 hour shifts still happily married to their first wife and often times their high school sweet hearts. I don't know any where I worked rotating shifts thst were divorced.

I'm not the exception to the rule and think that I am makes you naive and rather immature.

Those where divorces happen happened for other reasons than "shift work" those relationships were probably doomed from the get go and "shift work" was a lame excuse used to divorce.

Jokhe,

I'm a father of a 16 year old son, and a soon to be 8 year old daughter both are extremely smart in school and at home. And they know about gun safety and what not. I'm raising them right.
