Greetings and a Happy New Year to all !

I transitioned from Windows 7 to Windows 10 some time ago. I backup everything to an external hard drive and use Windows 7 backup and restore. I have not experienced any problems in doing so until today. The backup failed to complete and I get this message:

Thoughts anyone??

I saw this same issue in another forum. It was narrowed down to the user's app data folder.

The native Windows "backup and restore" feature was deprecated several years ago.
Even MS advises not to use it.

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/w8cookbook/windows-7-backup-and-restore-deprecated

There are several third-party alternatives.
Alas, most/all of the good ones (& those offering the best support) are not free.

Having said that, reluctance to invest begs the question: how much are one's precious data worth?

Thanks Porthos for your response. Do you recall the forum that you're referring to? I sure hope that this is not malware.

@MoxieMomma, I appreciate the advice but am focused on the reason for the failure.

I have tried to be extremely selective on what websites I visit and have not downloaded anything recently. I have done scans with MBAM and Adware cleaner and the results were negative. So, I'm puzzled.

Error message is specific as to reason why.

I would run Adware Cleaner and look at the log data for any notations...and use a genuine 3d-party backup.

Are you expecting W10 to run a Win 7 backup file?  If so...that does not seem to be a reasonable expectation, IMO.

Info Re Issue.

Hi, @sikntired:

Perhaps the detection is a false positive?
Perhaps not.
We cannot work on malware diagnosis or clean-up here in this forum section.

For peace of mind, perhaps head over to the Malware Removal section?
A trained expert will guide you through checking and - if need be - cleaning the computer.

Thanks for the input Hamluis. I've run Adware and there are no Log Data notations other than the scans were clean. As for expecting Win 10 to run Win 7 backup files, it was an option in Win 10 backup and restore. I could have used Win 10 backup but thought better of it. I often thought of using 3rd party software but never followed through due to not being user friendly or idiot-proof for me.

I am now questioning as to whether I should visit the Malware Removal forum or not.

Your issue is the same as the other user,  it is this file /folder

They will get you fixed up. The user in the other forum just stopped backing up the AppData folder and backup worked after that and declined further assistance. :smash:

Locked for now until new topic in malware removal forum is completed. If you want this one opened

then ask a mod to remove the lock.
