• United Arab Emirates (UAE): The UAE has blocked several social apps that can be used to engage in video calls or free phone calls. These VoIP blocks include apps like Skype, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and FaceTime.
• Vietnam: The Vietnamese government has previously enforced blocks on social media posts, social media accounts, and online services that are critical of the government.
• India: The Indian government banned TikTok in June 2020, which means that you will need a VPN to use this social platform in India.
• Afghanistan: Since the takeover of the Taliban in 2021, some social media bans have been enforced. This includes the banning of TikTok, which was deemed to pose a threat due to content that is not consistent with Islamic beliefs.
• Myanmar: The military has previously enforced blocks on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and WhatsApp to prevent citizens from expressing dissent and organizing opposition. 

How are government social media blocks enforced?

When you connect to the internet your service is provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). The ISP’s gateway server provides you with your connection to the web and they can use various types of filters to block access to specific websites and services. If the government decides to block social media, it may force ISPs to comply with social media blackouts.

When this happens, ISPs employ techniques like IP and domain filtering, DNS filtering, Deep Packet Inspection, URL Keyword filtering, and ASN blocks to block access to social media. These techniques use various methods to censor the domains and IP addresses of social media services.

DNS filtering, for example, involves blocking access to URLs associated with social media platforms. ASN (Autonomous System Number) blocks involve restricting access to entire IP address ranges in order to prevent access to social media services. Both these techniques ultimately prevent you from accessing your social accounts and mean that you can no longer communicate with friends and family.

A VPN allows you to bypass these blocking methods. By connecting to a VPN server outside of your country, you gain access to a foreign IP, and you can use the VPN as if you were a citizen living in that country. This restores your access to websites like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, TikTok, LinkedIn, and anything else that has been censored by the government.

Why is my country blocking social media?

Countries block social media platforms for various reasons. This includes political, cultural, or religious motivations. In some cases, specific social pages, accounts, or entire platforms are blocked to prevent the dissemination of information critical of the government or to block posts considered a threat to the peace or that challenge cultural norms.

Unfortunately, some governments abuse traditions and religious beliefs as a pretext to enforce propaganda and restrict access to information. This enables overreaching governments to maintain tight control over the country and prevents citizens from sharing information that exposes corruption or increases support for opposition parties.
