Can I use a free VPN browser extension for Firefox?

On the whole, we wouldn’t recommend it. Many of them track and store data that can be monetised further down the line. Others fail to encrypt traffic and may also leak users’ real IP addresses. Most impose data caps and bandwidth limits.

Do VPN browser extensions work?

If you want to protect your internet traffic while using public WiFi, or change your virtual location without having to download and install a full VPN app, then yes – they do work. However, they don’t work as well as a full VPN app, which provides stronger encryption and more features.

What does the Firefox private window do?

Opening a private window in Firefox doesn’t make you invisible online. It’s more of a tool for hiding your browser activity from others on shared devices. It deletes cookie data when you close the browser window and doesn't track your browsing data. Tracking cookies are blocked by default, and it won’t remember any files you download – though these will still be present on your device.

Is the Mozilla VPN OK?

However, we’d recommend using Mullvad over Mozilla VPN. For one, Mullvad is based in Sweden, which does far more to protect its citizens’ privacy than Mozilla’s US home – where the government seeks to actively exploit it. 

Furthermore, Mullvad allows users to sign up anonymously and pay for the service using cash or cryptocurrency. The Mozilla VPN, by contrast, requires users to create a Firefox account using a valid email address and pay for the VPN service using either PayPal or a credit card.

Can I use a browser extension at work?

If your employer doesn’t allow you to install apps on a work device, a browser extension is a good alternative to a full VPN app. It allows you to access otherwise restricted sites and change your virtual location.
