Microsoft Almighty strikes again!

This dratted digital doggy doo doo appeared on my taskbar when booting today!

I don't want it!

Having Googled for removal instructions, I find I'm out of my depth within the first few seconds!

The instructions don't seem to match the real world experience, ...possibly because they are besotted with "Windows 11" and the solution presumes this from the start. :killcomp:

Any simple solution?

...apart from moving to Linux, which I already use as well!

Hi:

The advice/solution may differ, depending on a few factors/variables.

  • Are you on Windows 10 or Windows 11?
  • What EDITION, version and build? (For example Windows 10 Home 22H2 19045.4046)
  • Are you using a LOCAL account or a MICROSOFT account on the computer in question?
  • Do you really want to remove it or just disable/hide it?

Thanks

For starters....

Thanks for the links as stated, I'm on Win 10 Ver 22H2 (Build 19045. 4046)

following that link, I notice the wording is very specific, "How to remove the Copilot Button"

No idea what you mean regarding the Yellow Box, but since I don't want to just remove the button, I clicked the link from the list of tutorials at the bottom of the page which you described and selected "Enable or Disable Copilot in Windows 11 and Windows 10".

Sadly I am once more in the realms of "Geekdom" and may as well be reading it in Dutch!

Not at all what you might call "User friendly"

I'm sorry, but you didn't mention your Windows version or build in the original post.
In fact, you did mention Windows 11.

Be that as it may.
If you look at the TUTORIAL at tenforums.com the link for which is in my first reply, you will see a yellowish box. I mentioned it only as a landmark to help you find the other links to the other references listed on that tutorial page.

Cheers

And you have not told us: are you using a LOCAL user account or a MICROSOFT user account?

(We are not in front of your computer. The more information you can provide, the better we can assist you. Thank you.)

What are the steps to disable Microsoft Copilot in Windows 10?

To disable Microsoft Copilot in Windows 10, navigate to System Settings, locate the AI features section, and toggle off the Copilot option. This will turn off the Copilot assistance within your operating system.

How can one deactivate Copilot in Microsoft Edge browser?

Deactivating Copilot in Microsoft Edge can be done by accessing the browser’s settings. Look for a section dedicated to advanced features or extensions and disable the Copilot feature from there.

=========

I did state the following though:- "The instructions don't seem to match the real world experience, ...possibly because they are besotted with "Windows 11" and the solution presumes this from the start"

also having posted in this forum, the implication is that I'm seeking help with Windows 10.

and I'm using a Microsoft Account

@buddy215, where do I begin to "navigate"?

Capture2.jpg

In my desire to get rid of this AI thing, I've attempted something I have never before done, the dreaded "Regedit!" following this link:-

Come somewhat unstuck at the end, where they say:-

Sign out from your account, and sign in back to apply the change.

You are done. From now on, your user account will no longer have Windows Copilot. It will be disabled for you.

I have no idea how to sign out whilst in Regedit, so I closed it and shut down/restarted my PC.

Expecting the world to end, I was pleasantly surprised to find that Windows 10 still worked, but irked to find that the dratted button was still there and functional!

I'll try again using your instructions, if you can be more specific!

Thanks.

No idea why my post is suddenly double line spaced, or how to correct it!

I am pretty sure that this article applies to Windows 11 ("Article 02/09/2024 Applies to:✅ Windows 11, version 22H2 or later")

The OP is running Windows 10 (BUT it is a helpful article, as some of the concepts may well apply to both 10 and 11, even though Copilot implementation differs significantly between 10 and 11).
FWIW Methods to disable or uninstall Copilot depend on the Windows EDITION (since HOME lacks Group Policy Editor) - that's why I requested some basic system information in my original reply.

Having said all that, the advice offered in this thread comports closely with the advice offered in what appears to be the OP's other thread HERE

(FWIW, according to @Porthos THIS TUTORIAL works for both Windows 10 and 11 - good to know!)

And the issue appears to have been resolved via the regedit that had been referenced both here and elsewhere.

Cheers

OK, here is the deal. co-pilot is part of Edge and Edge is baked into Windows:

There are two things you can do:

If the Co-pilot button is on the task bar you can hide it. That's all you don't remove it.

You can also stop co-pilot jumping out at you in Edge. You need to tinker about  in Edge settings to stop co-pilot starting as you open Edge. Co pilot will then be a tiny icon in the top right corner of the Edge Window when you suceed. Even hovering over the icon will still open co-pilot.

OR

You can do what Pk shadow has suggested and use the program shut-up. But you need to be confident about what you are doing.

@aldfort:

Exactly.
You hit the nail on the head with your helpful "30,000 foot" explanation.

In retrospect, I ought to have done the same thing, rather than try to provide granular assistance to the OP.

Thanks for pulling it all together!

Well! thanks everyone for your help.

I was intent on using the tool offered by @Pkshadow, and was seeking endorsement from the MBAM site as I was , and still am a bit nervous of it's evident power!

Porthos offered the two reg edits as a simple clean solution and it seemed to work as the taskbar button was removed, i.e. it was no longer available in the context menu.

However today when following a totally unrelated link in Chrome browser, the dratted copilot sidebar appeared on my desktop!

The damned program is still active!

I have opened Edge and denied any and all available options for it and hope that will silence it.

I also tried to find the startup folders following this and was surprised to find that both the folders were empty so I have decided not to venture further down this particular rabbit hole!

little by little, getting closer to pulling the trigger!
