In trying to troubleshoot a separate problem – none of the three iPhones in this house will be recognized by Windows 10 on any of the three computers in this house [Call that “Problem B”] – I have discovered a broader problem which I have a hunch, in the back of my mind, might be responsible.

Thinking that it would be a good idea for me to make sure I’ve installed the latest Windows Update available, I manually performed an update check.  Unfortunately, doing so led to the following error message:

“There were some problems installing updates, but we'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help: (0x80070643)”.

And in my Windows Updates History, I see that updates actually haven’t been installing successfully for quite a while.

In searching this forum, I noted that there was indeed another user who posted a help request for what seems to be this very same problem with Windows Updates.

The requested info on what I’m running:

Microsoft Windows

Version 22H2 (OS Build 19045.4046)

Can someone help me determine what’s wrong?

Thanks in advance,

Steve

Hello:

We would need to know - at the bare minimum - WHICH update(s) are failing.
(You could post info or a screenshot from your Windows Update history.)

But, TMAVLSS, it's likely KB5034441.

See here (& many other, similar topics all over the internet):
https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/793160/kb5034441-error-0x80070643/

And here:
https://www.tenforums.com/windows-10-news/210321-kb5034441-security-update-windows-10-21h2-22h2-jan-9-a.html

IF that's the case, the current advice is to HIDE that update until MS devises a workable solution. (All the other "fixes" entail complicated, somewhat risky computer surgery that's not feasible for most home users.)

If you have repeated failure to install KB5034441 then this is normal and you should simply ignore (hide) this update.

Ask if you are not sure how to do this.

If any other updates are failing then it is likely windows update is broken. This is not odd by any means. Check under Settings>> Update and Security>>Windows Security>>Virus and Threat protection. Look for the last date that there was a security update. If it's not in the last 24 hours then Windows Update is very broken.

There are many ways to try to fix this, the ultimate way is a clean install of Windows.

The very first step is to back up all of your data to the cloud or to an external SSD or HDD.

Once you have done this come back for help to fix windows update.

@sbutk1:

Is it just KB5034441?
If so, hide it, as previously suggested.

If not and if - indeed - there are other failed updates, then there are most certainly things to try short of a Windows reinstall.
You are on the current Windows 10 build (19045.4046). So something must be working OK.

While a clean install *might* be needed, that would be a rash decision now, until we gather more info and until we try a few less destructive approaches.

....To continue:

In addition to a screenshot of your Windows Update history, please do this:

FIRST:

1. Please download, install and run the Free version of Speccy from here: https://www.ccleaner.com/speccy.
2. Then, go to File > Publish Snapshot
3. Click YES > Copy to Clipboard
4. Then please post the LINK to the report by pasting it into your next reply.

NEXT:

1. Please download and install MiniToolBox from here: https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/minitoolbox/
2. Place a checkmark in the following boxes:

List Last 10 Event Viewer Errors
List Installed Programs
List Problematic Devices
List Users, Partitions and Memory size

3. Click “GO”
4. Please post the text results here by pasting them in your next reply in this thread.

Thanks

Thank you, and to all who have responded.

Yes, the Windows Update that won't install is, indeed, KB5034441.

Therefore I will hold off on any reinstallations yet, and see where these troubleshooting measures get me.

I will now go about following the instructions in my next post.  Thank you, again.  And stay tuned...

Thanks for the clarification.

The safest approach for now is to HIDE that update.
The tutorial I linked in my original reply explains how.

Cheers

It took some doing - for user with very limited "under the hood" tech experience - but I do believe I was successful in temporarily blocking updates.

Going to grab a bite to eat, and when I return I'll go about addressing your next post...

No, no, no! ☹️

You don't want to block updates.
That's a very unsafe strategy.

You want to **HIDE** only that specific update (KB5034441).

I am away from my computer, with limited posting capabilities at the moment.
So, unless/until someone else pops in with details on how to proceed, go get your lunch.
There's nothing you need to do "emergently", but you'll need to re-enable Windows Updates and then proceed with ONLY hiding KB5034441.

PS When you are ready to discuss your other, unrelated issue, please start a new, separate topic with a different title.

Oops, sorry for my misunderstanding.

Just to allay any fears, I hadn’t actually disabled updates outright, but rather, selected “Notify of Download and Installation”.

I’ve gone back and undone my goof, though.  And gone and reread carefully, and feel that I’ve now successfully hidden Windows Update KB5034441.

I’ll now set out performing the requested tasks in your subsequent post.

Thanks for bearing with me…

Here is a series of screenshots I took when I encountered the Windows Update that did not install (and has subsequently been hidden).

It includes my Windows Update history back through when Updates were being successfully installed...
