I recently was unable to maintain connection to a Zoom meeting. I have recently had other problems with internet connectivity.  I then ran a speed test and was informed that my internet connection speed is "very low". This despite the fact that I have installed an Ethernet connection to my extension router!  Verizon (we have Fios) tells me that my routers should be upgraded. That will increase their fees. Is there any way to test the claim that the problem is outmoded routers?

What speed are they contracted to deliver?

What speed are you getting?

Why you would not post more details is beyond me?

Please answer eddie's questions and provide Download and Upload speeds from >>>HERE

When you have an Extension router that will also reduce speed even more.

I have recently had other problems with internet connectivity.

Like what?

Please follow the directions below so that we can see what kind of hardware you are using.  Also post the exact model of the computer in question.

Publishing a Speccy profile to the Web

To keep a record of your system profile at any given time, you can publish to the Web using Speccy.  Speccy uses Piriform's servers to publish the profile without any identifying information. Each profile is given a unique URL.

The last part of each URL is randomized, so only people you provide with the URL will be able to find your profile.

Direct Download Here

What you are doing is copying a Link from the Speccy tool and pasting it in your next post.

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

  1. In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.
  2. In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click; Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.
  3. Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.

Note: The published profile will use the same language and temperature settings (Imperial or Metric) as your Speccy installation.

Note: Each time you start Speccy, it will generate a new randomized URL. This is useful if you want to track your computer's information over time.

HEy, thanks for your interest and questions. To start from the top, this a Toshiba laptop Satellite L750-A7283. We have our main router upstairs. My wife has no problem getting Wi-Fi reception upstairs. In contrast, I just tested my speed upstairs using wi-fi and had a ping of 10, an upload speed of 0.5 mbs and for download, all of 0.02 mbs (using ookla's tester). However, I usually work downstairs. Initially is used wi-fi, depending on the upstairs router, but had poor results, so I rent an extension router, which is located in my office where my laptop is used. I have had many cases of losing connections, so I switched to using an ethernet cable to the extension router. I recently could not stay connected with a Zoo0m meeting, so I tested the speed and was informed it was "very low".

I didn't know Verizon FIOS is contracted to deliver any particular speed. Would that depend on what connection was used and whether extension router is used? We have a desktop upstairs which is connected via ethernet. It seems to be okay, but I haven't tested it. I just tested the desktop using the link you sent aqnd it was rated "fast", at 82. When I test the laptop using wifi upstairs, it is rated "fast" using the tester you sent, at 7.2 mbs, but the test I did a half hour ago (above) was much, much slower. I downloaded Speccy onto the laptop (which I am not typing in) and here is the URL: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/l3MBMDYjOSVFRZIcat5o1Lt

I hope I have provided the information you need. Des

This post is a mess, you keep jumping from one computer to the next and I don't know what speeds you are getting with the computer in question!!!!!  I assume this is on the computer in question?

This is not good enough for Video Chatting.  You need to get a Wifi Adapter for your laptop, or run Ethernet cable from the Main Router to downstairs.  The Wifi card on that laptop is either shot or just plain junk!!!!

GET ONE OF THESE ON AMAZON  Click that link

How is the "extension router" connected to the main router, Wifi or Ethernet?  And by the way, I don't think it is an extension router but a Wifi Extender, get the model number off of it please.

I didn't know Verizon FIOS is contracted to deliver any particular speed.

It depends on what you are paying for

Would that depend on what connection was used and whether extension router is used?

Looks like either the extension router or the cable is not up to par.  Can you run an ethernet cable to the downstairs?

I just tested the desktop using the link you sent and it was rated "fast", at 82.

That is good

That is not fast, that is slow

I suggest that you read this article: - Best Powerline Adapter Of 2023 | TechRadar - Spending a little extra on the "Pass through" variety is money well spent.

If one PC, in the same room, is getting 82mbps, and another is getting 7.5mbps (at more or less the same time), and there are no other computers active. Then the slower one needs attention.

The more "Real" information you can give us, the better we will be able to help.

Thanks for mentioning this as I got caught up in all the confusion.

Either both laptops are having issues or there is something wrong with the Router Wifi signal.

Verizon (we have Fios) tells me that my routers should be upgraded.

I think this is the issue too!  And what do you mean by "my Routers", they belong to you or Verizon?

A little to much for me but the Motherboard is : AMD Larne :

https://www.amd.com/en/system/files?file=2017-06/g-series-soc-product-brief.pdf

Which is a embedded 1st and or 2nd Generation Chip and can see what this is all about with the above URL.

This is not something to be spending time on figuring this out.    Format and install Linux Mint.  Note : Windows 10 End of Life mid year 2025.

Why not go for the easiest fix available and that is to run AdwCleaner and see if anything needs taking care of and then you do not skip the last step as it will reset the Winsock when reboot.

@Des_Kahn  Do you already have a USB Wifi Adapter, because that is what it looks like in speccy?  You should have pointed that out.

I would test the computer at another location with good wifi.

reply to pcpunk:  27 October 2023 - 03:07 PM: I have been tied up with other matters and could not return to this until now. Mr. Punk, let me reply to you by saying It's not so much that my post is a mess as much as it is that you're reply is a mess. Please take two chill pills and call me in the morning.  I first specify my laptop, which is the problem and than compare its performance with that of my wife's computer (unspecified) when both of them are upstairs. Upstairs is where our main router is located and our desktop, which is connected to the router by Ethernet. I mentioned that my wife has no problem getting wifi with her laptop, and then present that results of a speed test on my laptop when it is upstairs.

However, the biggest problem is with my laptop connectivity downstairs, which is where my office is located. Originally, I tried to use wifi to connect with the upstairs router. No good, so I rented an extension router from Verizon. It is an Actiontec WC86200Q. That extender is connected to the main router by a cable, but it is black and does not resembler a standard yellow ethernet cable. For me to run an ethernet cable downstairs would be difficult, it would have to go down the stairs and into the office by getting through the door.

When I tested the laptop and got 7.5, that was on the same floor as the desktop rated at 82, but it was in a different room. However, my wife gets good wifi in that same room with her laptop, where I was only getting a 7.5

I have a "dongle" with a USB wifi adapter (I think that is what it is). However, I still have the problem. I have explained that my laptop has poor wifi even though my wife's laptop has no problem in the same room upstairs (the floor that the main router is located on. I exdplained that even though my laptop downstairs is connected via Ethernet to the "extension router" (model provided above) I have poor and slow connectivity down in my office, where I haveto work. I would rather not spend one to two hundred dollars on the optional equipment you informed me about. What does AdwCleaner do that could possibly help this problem. Should I try to replace the wifi adpter that I have (including what I think is one on the USB dongle?). Please advise. Thanks for your help. Des Kahn

Did you disable the original Wifi Card in your laptop?

Are you connecting to 2.4 or  5Ghz?

What does your wife's laptop get upstairs?

I never suggested 200 dollars worth of equipment!  Though you have been told that you need a better router by the ISP.

"Verizon (we have Fios) tells me that my routers should be upgraded."

Please post the model of the Router?

You keep saying this room, that room, on the same floor blah blah blah.  When you should have both laptops in the same room as the router and compare them.  Less words but more accurate.  "My laptop" "Wife's laptop" "Upstairs" etc.  The fact is you won't get good wifi if you are to far away AND using an Extender.

What speeds are you paying for?

I see now that you are connected to the extender via Coax Cable right?  So you should be getting good decent speeds if the Router is compatible with and setup properly.  Looks like it is plug and play but there are some things that can be checked.

Please answer the other questions before we do anything else.

RESPONSE:

Did not disable Wifi card.

I don’t know whether we have 2.4 Gz or 5Gz, but I haven’t heard anything about us having 5 Gz.

My wife uses her laptop upstairs because that is where our living room is.

Another guy on bc suggested more expensive equipment, not you

Router is a Fios-G1100.

I compared both laptops in the same room. My wife’s was fine, but mine had poor connectivity. That should tell you there is some problem with my laptop’s connectivity even when there should not be a problem, because the other laptop was fine. She was not using an extender, but her computer worked and mine didn”t.

When you say “you won’t get good wifi if you are too far away AND using an extender”, it is unclear why anyone would use an extender. The only reason to use one is that, otherwise, one is “too far away”. I thought that was the purpose of an extender. You seem to imply using an extender is worse than not using one.

I don’t have any idea of what “speeds we are paying for.” Noone has brought that up.

Did not disable Wifi card.  You need to do this.

I don’t know whether we have 2.4 Gz or 5Gz, but I haven’t heard anything about us having 5 Gz.  I see now that your wifi card is not capable of 5Ghz

I compared both laptops in the same room. My wife’s was fine, but mine had poor connectivity.

Here we go again!  What are your wife's speeds compared to yours when in the same room as the base router?

Obviously this is the one you want to use:  Realtek RTL8188CU Wireless LAN 802.11n USB 2.0 Network Adapter

Disable this one in Device Manager:  Realtek RTL8188EE Wireless LAN 802.11n PCI-E NIC

Windows 10 Network Disable Network Card

1. Right Click on the Start Menu and Choose Device Manager from the list.

2. Expand Network Adapters and Right Click the Device you want and select Disable.

My last comment was before I realized that you were using an MoCA connection, via Coax cable, you failed to mention that.  Most Wifi Extenders are just that, connected via Wifi, and in some cases Ethernet when available.

Ginnamin, thanks for your suggestions and attempts to help me. One point that may have been lost in our discussions is that even when I am not relying on Wifi by using an ethernet cable to the extension router, I still have unworkable connectivity. SOmetimes things don't work, such as the Zoom meeting I mentioned, even with that Ethernet cable. I will attempt to follow the usggestions you have given me.
