New Dell XPS 8960

Windows 11 Home

Version 23H2

Installed on  2/10/2024

BIOS Version/Date  Dell Inc. 2.3.0, 12/11/2023

Keyboard is a Dell kB900 on Bluetooth.

 

 

On Startup I get “Alert: Keyboard initialization error.”  Exactly as described here with the screen image too:

It is just a few seconds, the alert window disappears and the computer continues to start fine and works well.

I took a quick look at BIOS as suggested in the comments of the link above, but didn't see "Settings" so that I could look for keyboard errors and a box to uncheck.

 

Like the poster on that link, my OCD tells me to try to eliminate this brief alert window on every startup.

Hi:

1) Is this a brand-new computer, or did you reinstall Windows on February 10?

2) If you did reinstall Windows on February 10, what issue prompted that?

3) Are there any yellow or red flags on devices in Windows device manager?

4) Are your device drivers up-to-date?

EDIT: 5) Do you see the same error if you use a different (especially wired or wifi) KB?

Does the error occur if you swap a different keyboard (such as the Dell stock, wired KB or a wifi keyboard)?

Did you update drivers (especially BT) through Dell or through Windows Update?

Do NOT take driver updates from MS.
Since you have Windows 11 HOME, you'll want/need Option Two here:

Instead, get your drivers directly from Dell, as suggested above.

I don't see anything recent at Dell Support Forums for this particular error (and the previous reports were for other product lines, several years ago).

While you wait for more help here, I would open a ticket at Dell Support.
Since both the PC & the KB are OEM Dell, and since they are both brand new, you have nothing to lose (even if you need to be persistent & insistent on escalation, if necessary).

Well, I'm out of ideas.
This does NOT appear to be a common problem.
I suspect something "one off" with your setup **OR** something painfully obvious that we're all missing.
(Based on your other threads, you've already made quite a few hardware & software mods to the system - perhaps one of those may be responsible?)

-- Do you get the error when you use a different KB (wired or wifi)?

-- Did you try @Pkshadow's troubleshooting step to uninstall the KB & then rebooting?

-- Is there any physical barrier blocking the BT KB connection?

-- Have you tried fresh batteries & turning the KB off & back on?

-- Have you considered an RMA for a possibly defective KB?

FWIW I've used multiple Dell desktops & laptops (with 2 in use and 2 retired at this very moment) & my experience with Dell warranty tech support has been quite favorable. IMHO live chat is not the best way. Phone support, insisting on escalation to Tier 2 or above, is much better. Sometimes, it takes a 2nd call to get the "right" person.

A routine internet search for the error message you report turned up only that Reddit link and the Dell Support Forum from several years ago.

Be that as it may....

I suggest trying @Pkshadow's advice to reinstall the device.

--- Is this the KB?

If so, it appears to have both wifi & BT connectivity.
If so, perhaps there's something amiss, creating conflict/competition between the 2 modes, either software or hardware.

--- Do you get the same error if you use wifi instead of BT?

--- Perhaps the KB is a lemon & needs to be returned by RMA.

I hope someone else has better advice & I hope you find a fix
