Hi: I only use Spotify very rarely. But its icon is stuck on my taskbar; I never pinned it there, it did it all by itself. I can get rid of it -- but not permanently; it reappears on the taskbar with every fresh boot.

If I right-click it, it says "Pin to taskbar," so it thinks it is NOT pinned. I removed it from the "Start" menu but it still appears on the taskbar.

There must be a way of fixing this . . . ?

Hi:

According to Uncle Google, this has been buggy for a long time.

But, just to clarify, is the icon in the TASKBAR area or in the SYSTEM TRAY area (right corner, by the clock)?

(The solution may depend on where you are seeing this unwanted icon.)

It's on the taskbar, on the left side with pinned icons that I put there.

Thanks for that info.

Disclaimer: I do not use Spotify for Windows

BUT:

1 -- Have you tried this?

Right-click in a blank area of the taskbar/system tray >  “taskbar settings” > scroll down to “Other System Tray Icons” > expand that list > if Spotify is there, toggle the switch to “Off” > reboot

2 -- Have you tried UNINSTALLING Spotify, at least temporarily, to troubleshoot?

Having said that, uninstalling Spotify seems to be difficult, too, based on findings of an internet search.

PS There's no need to use "QUOTE", as it can make a thread hard to follow. "REPLY" is usually sufficient and easier to read. Thanks!

It's there, but it was already shut off.

Actually I had uninstalled it a few months ago, and reinstalled it a couple of weeks ago. I do not remember it sticking in the taskbar before, although maybe that's why I uninstalled it.

I don't see a "Reply" button anywhere.

Just type your reply in the message composition box & hit the POST button (ignore the QUOTE button).

Anyway....

This app for Windows seems to have major problems with its taskbar icon & with proper, clean uninstall.

The only other immediate suggestions I have:

1. Update your video drivers - outdated GPU drivers can cause taskbar flakiness.

2. Run DISM & SFC

3. Check their forum: https://community.spotify.com/

I'm posting with a laptop, didn't notice the reply box at the end of the thread which most don't use elsewhere, especially if there's several different people in a thread. I'm new at this, only been online since 1994. :(

I use "Advanced Uninstaller" for uninstalling programs, which is what I used some time ago for Spotify. It seemed to do a good job with it -- nothing strange popped up until I reinstalled Spotify.

I will do #1.

What do the acronyms in #2 stand for?

Routine internet searches turned up many complaints about this app's taskbar icon behavior and problems with uninstalling it.

And I don't know if the 3rd-party uninstaller you used may have contributed to your issue, *or not*.

I suspect the root problem lies with the app itself, rather than with your system, especially if this is the only one misbehaving.

But, to answer your question, if you want to try these:

DISM (note: there are 3 separate steps to this, first to find problems & then to fix them)

https://www.elevenforum.com/t/repair-windows-image-component-store-in-windows-11.734/

SFC

https://www.elevenforum.com/t/use-system-file-checker-sfc-to-repair-system-files-in-windows-11.720/

If no one here has better advice, I'd suggest checking at the Spotify forum.

Cheers

"Advanced Uninstall" didn't even have Spotify on its list.

"Windows Uninstall" showed it, but wouldn't let me delete it.

So I put the shortcut in the trash bin and the icon has not showed up on the taskbar. The .exe and other program files are still here, but as long as they remain dormant I'll just leave it like that.

Do you recall how it was downloaded and installed?

You may need to temporarily reinstall it and then consider using Revo or Geek Uninstaller to completely remove it.

I'm not sure deleting only the shortcut will be a longterm solution....
And of course it leaves potentially vulnerable remnants behind.

It sure seems like Spotify for Windows is half-baked, at best.
Not surprising:

Good luck! :)

I've used Revo before, but never installed it on this computer.

Backstory: I was watching a 3-hour long Joe Rogan episode on the Spotify app on TV via Roku a couple weeks ago. I was well into the 2nd hour and I accidentally hit the wrong button on my remote. It stopped the tape and it went back to 00. The app is also STUPID even on Roku. You cannot fast-forward or otherwise get to the spot where you were except in 15 second jumps, starting from the beginning, hitting the FF button each time.

So I was going to watch the rest on my laptop, where you can FF or FR. But I realized I no longer had the app, so I reinstalled it a couple weeks ago so I could finish the Rogan program.

I don't remember why I had uninstalled it before, probably because it was just annoying to use.

And here we are.

Revo didn't "see" the Spotify app either.

CCleaner did see a couple of the files in the registry, so I cleaned that and rebooted.

There are still several Spotify folders and files on the hard drive, including the .exe. I guess I'll just leave them alone for now and see what happens.
