Hi...

My name is DeeBee.  I am rather old.  40something years.  The last operating system I really enjoyed using was window 7.  Ultimate.  Back then, if I had a tcp/udp connection in/out, I knew about it.  Because I was the sole authority of its creation and use.

I don't so much enjoy windows 10 or 11.  It seems as though I have at least 20 to 30 incoming/outgoing entries in my nat/arp -a table at once.  And although I may have agreed to the 'end user whatever license agreement' at the beginning of installation, I did not really want all of these user experience connections (I mean, do I need windows to install active directory and cram a bunch of crapware onto my fresh clean installation of windows 10 and 11???   Well, if the PC is a Dell, and I use the digital license for activation, apparently the answer is, "YES,  I would LOVE to have 45 apps from microsoft / third parties listening to me, watching me, logging my keystrokes, creating a unique advertising ID that is more unique than my social security number (yes, I am from MS, in the USA ha ha Hi).

So I am here to learn to enjoy Windows 11...and maybe even Windows 10.  Looking forward to your experience, and adding to mine/sharing with others.

DB

dburk1979,  only 40something in age?

First o.s. I used was (for modern times) was Windows 3.1.   Finally a Computer Literacy course at a local community school helped.  Much later on, XP was not bad to deal with.  Windows 10 for a common person is about the same but now Microsoft tries hard to encourage people to create a Microsoft Account.  I still rely on Local Account for my Windows 10 use.

Thank you for the 2 suggestions.   Will be looking into them both tonight.  As for firewall, I have only limited experience with McAfee Livesafe (it is a HUGE comprehensive overkill of a set of programs that suck all of the limited resources from my limited CPU (in my desktop and in my brain) ) and Microsoft Defender Firewall (which no longer notifies me about blocking anything--and resets itself seemingly every restart of my pc, thus eliminating any instrucitons/rules I enabled prior to).

Please offer a suggestion.  I'm about to try Bitdefender because it is part of a subscription I paid a year for with orbi router system (rbk863sb).  I'm open to any suggestions.

By the way this Forum is for Introductions Only and not for posting issues, ranting and raving, nor any other Topic.  Thank you.

I have asked that this be moved somewhere.  Your Topics you have brought up would think that this may go to the Win11 Forum.

=====================================================================================================

I would suggest that you uninstall : McAfee Livesafe

I would think the problem you describe with Defender is that it is active as is McAfee.  You can not run 2 A/V programs and would not run 2 Firewalls.

When Uninstalling should use Geek or Revo Uninstallers as will get more than a MS Uninstall/Program Uninstaller.

Suggest add this for Defender : https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/configuredefender.html

Suggest this for your Firewall : https://www.makeuseof.com/windows-firewall-control-guide/ after reading the review and description there is a link to Binsoft.

NOTE : the Developer of the program now works for Malwarebytes and is reason you see that.

Speaking of Malwarebytes should have it installed always as it is a great standalone scanner.

Do this though : https://www.howtogeek.com/230158/how-to-run-malwarebytes-alongside-another-antivirus/

As well : should have in your Toolbox : https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/

&

Run for your Browser as that is the 1st place in mostly : https://www.malwarebytes.com/browserguard

You will find the 2 programs I suggested to you will fulfil mostly all you want.  There are other things as mentioned to fulfil your desires if have Pro or higher.

Though there are some things that can be done for Win Home though they may revert with updates. (AGAIN yes you take all updates, if running O&O you will not see most or all of the updates though Security issues will be fixed which if look at the Malware or the Ransomware Forums you will see that updating is needed. Also is not a place you want to be.)

For your ORBI rbk863sb : https://www.netgear.com/support/product/rbk863sb#download Firmware Updates if have not installed any.

Bitdefender can cause issues.  As well again all things must be turned off so do not run 2 A/V's at the same time. As well would need to follow the info provided in "How to run Malwarebytes alongside another A/V" and exclude those folders.  As well would need to search what Bitdefender folders not to Scan.

Would also suggest to let us check for issues or you can : (though we know what to look for) :

Please Post a "link" of Speccy Report.
Please install Speccy Free : https://m.majorgeeks.com/files/details/speccy.html
Use Custom Install
At the Top Left Corner of Speccy --> Click File and then Click Publish Snapshot Report, a window will popup and Click YES. --> Another popup will appear and then Click "Copy To Clipboard" then Paste that "link" to your next reply in your thread.

Download Minitoolbox from the below link :
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/minitoolbox/
Run the tool and only select the following tick boxes.
-List last 10 Event viewer errors
    -List installed programs
    -List devices
-List users, partition and memory size
Now click "Go" and Copy/Paste and post the output text in your next reply

I got started with computers when all we had was DOS and everyone worked with command line, when i bought my first desktop system a Gataway 486 i was offered the new Microsoft Windows ,everyone i worked with then told me i was making a big mistake and they were right.

You have to understand there was no internet like we have today, we used modems and our phone lines and i remember tying up the home phone 15 hours getting a picture to my computer.

As i remember there was Win 95 Windows and work groups Vista a " disaster" think we got XT used it till Win 7 got 8 then 8.1 and ended up with Win 10, until 11 that was it.

I still have a older ASUS with Win 7 on it and it still works great, i understand in mainland China millions maybe Billions are still using Win 7.

My real problem with Windows 11 is only one of my older programs will install on Win 11, every program i own installed on Win 10.

Anyway i guess we have to deal with progress.

@Russianbear

At 80, and having worked with computers for well over 40 years, I can certainly relate.

Dos 2.0 was my first OS that I ran on a Home Brew PC/XT Clone.

From DOS 2.0 to Windows 11/Pro/64 has definitely been a pretty wild ride.

And, I've been fixing PC's through that whole process of upgrades from one level of OS to the next.

So I not only ran all of the OS's,  but I had to repair them as well.

Does that make me an expert on various versions of Windows?  No, just old, tired of other peoples self induced problems, and ready to accept my install of Windows 11/Pro/64 as my last OS.

I don't accept Windows Updates, which have the propensity of damaging my Great little OS, and I'm very careful as to what kind of programs I accept on my PC.  I actually have 12 PC's and I'm equally careful with every one of them.  They all work just great.

Those that are too old, or 32 bit, and cannot run Windows 11, run Windows 10/Pro/32 very well.

Granted, there are some of my old favorite programs that will not run on Windows 11, and for that reason I keep two more HD's on this PC, one with Windows 7/Ultimate/32 on it, and one with Windows 8.1/pro/32 on it.  What I can't run on Win-11, will run on one or both of the other two OS's.

My PC boots to Win-11 by default, but by using the F-12 option, I can boot up to either of the Win-7 or Win-8.1 Hard Drives.  So I get the best of all three OS's.

Windows 11 is very polite and never messes with either of the other two OS's.

Cheers mates, and Merry Christmas,

TM

Hey were both in our 80s and both have had a real run at this computer stuff, i do have one system running win 7 three with win 10 and my new MSI Stealth with what came on it Win11 not thrilled that only one of my programs will install in it but guess that is the price of progress.

I love it when the younger bunch complain about things today.

Good to hear from the real old guys. I am 76, wrote first program in 1969. Lately I build my own PCs. I have messed around with Linux builds, but get tired of needing to be hopping into the command line at the drop of a hat. I do keep an old Mac laptop on my KVM so I can remember how much Apple likes to hide what is actually happening. Love virtual boxes when I want to play with a different OS. Happy New Year.

At 73, I also have gone through a few coputers of my own and rebuilt and repaired for others.

My journey started with a feeble attempt to startup a donated DEC PDP-8 with paper tape while performing backup on an HP2000(?) minicomputer at my college. (Crashed the heads on a dirty Winchester cartridge - 128k I think)

Bought my 99% compatible Columbia PC, VGA monitor, Epson 1200 dot matrix printer, Hayes 1200 modem, and an 8MB external drive. DOS 1.2 or CPM.

DOS 2.0 through 6.1, Windows 3.11 was the first usable one.

Acer 386, Dell 486 XPS, 2006 Dell Inspiron laptop,  now still happily using my 2014 8700 XPS with SSD replacements and Windows 10 Home.

Windows 98, XP, 7, 10 were solid despite Microsoft fiddling with things that were not broken.

The underlying tech is keeping me onmy toes as I spec new computers. Intel generations, video progressions from VGA to HDMI to DisplayPort, USB A, B, C, WiFi a,b, n,ac, ax losing track.

and of course iPhones, Androids (Samsung to Pixel)

Finding good sources of support that are not overloaded with ads or inane comments is an ongoing battle.  :tophat:

At 76, I know the feeling of having seen the birth of the PC era. I wrote my first program in 1969 on a programmable calculator made by Olivetti. The program was stored on a magnetic card about 3" x 8". One side was coated white so you could write the program code in pencil on the card, while the other side was coated with something that looked like the surface of reel-to-reel tape. The calculator did not have a screen, in my dusty memory, instead it used paper tape like a cash register to print out everything.

No one here has talked about wire plug-in programming on giant slide-in trays, so I guess we are still just young pups. I have seen that type of programming, but ran away when I saw it.

I was just told that Geek Squad, by appointment, will help you pick out the parts and assemble a custom PC. You have to be a member with the right subscription, but I am thinking of giving it a try. My current box is 9 years old. I guess you buy the parts from them as well, but it would help to become conversant with the general speeds, usage and configurations you need. You don't need to buy one of their pre-configured PCs.
