From time to time I see these updates on Major Geeks for “Notepad”. I use Notepad to open some stuff sometimes, but not for anything else. I have no idea what version of Notepad that I have. For what “I” do, is it necessary to do these updates. I don’t even know if Microsoft updates does its thing with Notepad.

Winver – 23H2 – 22631.3085 -- HP Pavilion Desktop PC TP01-2000a

Thanks in advance

Microsoft updates will not do any updates for Notepad++. Make sure you are at least version 8.57 as that fixed some vulnerabilities.

https://notepad-plus-plus.org/downloads/v8.5.7/

You should be able to see what version you have by clicking help in the menu bar then click about.

Last version is 8.6.4. Mostly bug fixes.

So, what I have is "notepad" version 11.2312.18.0, not notepad++.  Since I don't think I have ever used (++) I assume I don't need it!

Thanks for replying.

Please go to the Microsoft Store for Updates to Notepad.  Several interesting things like tabs and more...

Hi,

Notepad and Notepad++ are two completely different programs, the first is included on Windows and yes its updated by Microsoft using Windows Update.

Notepad++ is a free Notepad alternative program that have a lot more features, it must be downloaded and installed by the user it have an auto update feature.

Notepad is not updated any longer by Windows Update.  It is now updated through the Microsoft Store for both Win10/11

I just saw some news about the removal of WordPad and not Notepad, Notepad available in the Microsoft Store is a different application that has extra functions but is not an update to Notepad included by default in Windows.

"This fast and simple editor has been a staple of Windows for years. Use it to view, edit, and search through plain text documents instantly."

The above is Official Page.

Yes, re Wordpad.

Insiders on 11 still get updates to Notepad through Update.

The above has replaced my Notepad then and when I go to the Store there is always a update for it. (all most)

Sorry, for some reason I was thinking notepad++, not Windows notepad.

Perhaps that was because the topic title is: "Notepad++8.6.4" ?

Having said that, the nomenclature with "Notepad", new "Notepad" MS Store app and "Notepad++" is certainly confusing!

And having said THAT, yes, it's important to keep one's software/apps updated because updates often patch security vulnerabilities.

Cheers!
