Following my usual pattern of staying on the trailing edge, I am currently using Windows 8.1 as my main system. I've got an nVidia graphics card with a driver that works fine. So I would not expect to have to upgrade except if I want to upgrade the card, which is what I want to do. I had thought that I could just get older drivers if they had stopped supporting 8.1 by the time I did this. I don't play very demanding games and tend to keep drivers for years. Rarely had any problems forcing an update, and don't like updating every few months for no good reason.

But when I go to the nVidia drivers site and look for drivers for the card I'm thinking of getting, there are none for 8.1, only for 7... ???

Go to: https://www.nvidia.com/download/index.aspx

And select Geforce 16 series, then select any card, it doesn't matter. The drop-down for OS version has 11, 10, and 7, then Linux and whatnot. But no Windows 8 or 8.1 for some reason. Why would there be NO drivers? Surely there was support before 8/8.1 ran out of service at the beginning of this year? Wouldn't those old drivers still be in their database? And if not, then why are the Win 7 drivers still there?

This is a real head-scratcher.

Another one today, go out and buy a real system and stop playing in the Dark Ages.   You as well do not supply the model # of the card nor  supply the reason you need to update.

Use the Win7 Drivers.

That's freaky. An entire generation of OS skipped. Oh well, sooner or later I'll have to use my Win 10 Student Edition license... might be sooner than I expected if the 7 drivers are not stable in 8/8.1 -- but they've been issuing the same package for both for many years so I wonder what the real difference is.

Might be too late as Win10 End of Life is mid year 2025.

more like October 2025 to be accurate for Win10 EOL (which is late year 2025)

The final version of Windows 10 is version 22H2, which will reach end of servicing on October 14, 2025.
