Hi:

Someone I'm trying to help as installed Server 2022 OEM on the wrong box. Instead of installing it on a customer server he built, he wasn't paying attention and and accidentally installed it on a desktop PC.

Is it possible use slmgr or some other method to deactivate/uninstall the license on the desktop so he can properly install the OS and activate it on the server, where it should be?

I know you can do this for desktop Windows OSes, but wasn't sure if it was possible on installs of OEM server, like Windows 2022 Server or Windows 2019 Server.

You should be able to install it on the server and then call Microsoft if it doesn't activate, but it should activate fine on the server.

It did activate fine. That's the point. He wants to be able to deactivate it, and put it on the correct machine. But once he's already activated it, is it too late?

And if not, how does he go about deactivating it from the wrong machine?

Removing it from the desktop then installing it on the server.

Huh? What do you mean, Dan? Yeah, but it's an OEM version. It's not going to activate again on another machine, friend. Unless, perhaps, I can deactivate it.

See my point?

Dan:

I'm talking about a Server OS. Okay, clearly no one here is sure/has first hand experience with this. So I'll have to call MS. Server OS policies are often very different than desktop OS policies.

I'm quite sure that one accidental install doesn't make the key completely inactive for use on another machine.

I managed to deactivate it using "slmgr /upk". We'll see how it works on the next install.

General warning to everyone: There's a ton of counterfeit Windows Server packages out there that won't activate. Luckily, this turned out to be legitimate.

I'm not sure why you've posted this, as all you've done is literally restate the question.
