My laptop has Vista Service Pack 2 installed and for some reason the optical drive is no longer recognized.  When I put a disc in to play, I can hear the head searching but then nothing else happens.  Opening up Computer with Windows Explorer, it shows the C: drive and nothing else.  It used to show C: drive and D: drives.  Opening the Device Manager, shows the drive is there and the General tab says that it's working properly.

I checked the web for solutions which mentioned checking that the audio player is enabled which it is. It also gave a solution about going into the registry and "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}" which I did but the Upper Filters it wanted me to delete wasn't listed so I exited the registry.

I can play MP3 or WAV files okay.  If I plug in an external USB disc drive, a CD plays fine but then put it in the optical drive and it doesn't.  I downloaded Rkill just this morning to check things and after running, it showed that it had terminated the "TODDrv.exe" file.  I was going to delete the file since it showed the file as "(PID: 3232) [WD-HEUR]" without quotes but decided to first check the web and found that it's a Toshiba program associated with an optical drive so left it alone.

I shut it down and restarted thinking that file would then be active again.  Anyway, I'm at a loss as to what may have happened.  The Rkill program didn't show any other anomalies which is why I'm asking for help.  Thanks...

Download and install Speccy - https://www.ccleaner.com/speccy

Run it, and then go to File and Publish Snapshot. Post the resulting link in your next reply.

Download and install min-toolbox from here: https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/minitoolbox/

Need the model of the drive to figure that out completely

Using A215-S7422 as the model of the Laptop : Vista : https://support.dynabook.com/support/modelHome?freeText=1852724&osId=3333636

Dynabook is who does the Support and page has all your drivers with CD at the top with out left side check boxes checked.

Thanks for the replies, Guys.  I'll answer both of you here.

Cryptodan - I clicked on your link for the Speccy program which took me to a page that wasn't available or not found (I can't remember, just blank) but I tried several times with the same results before giving up.  I got to checking the url address box and copied it.  This is where it sent me: https://www.go.bleepingcomputer.com/?id=3687X620620&isjs=1&jv=15.3.0-stackpath&sref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bleepingcomputer.com%2Fforums%2Ft%2F781948%2Ftoshiba-a215-s7422-optical-drive-not-recognized%2F%23entry5467585&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ccleaner.com%2Fspeccy&xs=1&xtz=420&xuuid=05fd7e7cba40c9b6eeed74130c829ed5&cci=7ad48fba9b4f1c533770339957fb23c1

I thought about it for a moment and removed the "go" part of it which did take me to their website.  I downloaded Speccy and installed it but it came up in some sort of non-english language that I didn't recognize so was not able to get what you wanted.  I did download the mini toolbox but haven't tried anything on it yet since I've been busy with Honey-do things most of the weekend.

Pkshadow - the DVD is a TSSTcorp model TS-L632H drive.  I clicked on your link which took me to the website and found the file shown for my Toshiba and downloading which was "fw_to02_os20081" so I clicked on it which took me to a 404 File Not Found page.

In the meantime, I had done more searching using a couple of other web tips but without any results and now, the drive doesn't even show up in the Disc Manager page like it had before.  In the meantime it had been completely shut down and restarted a few times during all this.  Anyway, I shut it down and left it alone overnight.  I decided to try working with it again this morning so after booting up, I happened to check the Start > Computer and the D: drive showed up and it was there as well in the Disc Manager.  I put a CD in and it played as it should.

So, for now, it's working as it should and I have absolutely no idea why not only did it quit working in the first place, but why it started working again.  Once again, I appreciate each of you trying to help and the provided suggestions.  I guess I'll have to wait and see if or when it acts up again and go from there.

Hi, Glad to know, happy it is working again for now :=}

Age would be a factor.  I have about 5 that work but no longer burn.

Am sure there was a mistake in the copy/paste for the URL  If fell the need to post Speccy Report if it acts up again : Speccy Free : https://www.ccleaner.com/speccy/download
Use Custom Install
At the Top Left Corner of Speccy --> Click File and then Click Publish Snapshot Report, a window will popup and Click YES. --> Another popup will appear and then Click "Copy To Clipboard" then Paste that "link" to your next reply in your thread.
