First off, my apologies have not been here in a while and my computer is 13 years old, which I will replace.

But, my old computer was working fine until 2 weeks ago.  That is when Verizon came in and gave me their new fiber optics which I believe is 300 mbps.  Suddenly I could not get Youtube to play ( or it erroneously said I was not connected to internet) or many times connect, same with Google Mail, and many other asst. websites.  While many websites still work fine, playing anything for the most part either buffer or do not load.

I operate usually on Chrome.

Even though it is old, it has been an excellent computer.  Excepting Mail my 3 main activities on it has always been  1. web surfing   2. watching sporting events off of one the collector websites  3.  same as #2 except watching television shows and movies off of another collector website.

I run AVG  for security and use malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware.

Hey, if i should give up the ghost I will understand but I honestly believe for what I use it for it has at least another couple years of good use.

Thank you all in advance.  This is and always been a godsend of a website for people like me :)

Hi VaMaster54 - Mike:

Is web browsing your only problem since your internet connection was upgraded?  For example, do you use a local email client like Vista's built-in Windows Mail program that is no longer working correctly, or is all your emailing done online via the Google Mail website?

Are you using Chrome v49 (rel. April 2016), and did you ever install the Firefox ESR v52.9.0 browser (rel. June 2018) as I suggested on 10-Nov-2021 in your thread Computers Date & Time are Incorrect Message?  If so, see if that Firefox ESR browser works correctly.  You never posted back in that 2021 thread to tell us if you ever fixed the "Your clock is ahead" error messages in your Chrome browser.

You might also want to try Fedor2's MyPal v68 browser available at https://www.mypal-browser.org/ that was discussed in cafejose's 29-Mar-2022 thread A Browser Option - MyPal.  This browser is based on Firefox 68 (rel. Jul 2019) and is still maintained by Feodor2, and it has become a popular choice for many Win XP and Vista users.  There is an active discussion about this browser in Jody Thornton's thread MyPal 68 in the MSFN forum.

One question, can you navigate to  any banking sites if you can that is a very good sign.

Can you run a few speedtests at www.speedtest.net and share the results?

Hi VaMaster54 - Mike:

Further to my previous question, I forgot to ask if Verizon provided a new router with your upgraded fiber optic connection, and whether you connect using a wireless/WiFi connection or with a cabled Ethernet connection.  Your issue reminds of a discussion in the Dell forum at WiFi Band that was started by a user who had problems connecting their Epson printer to their AT&T gateway.  It's possible the wireless and/or Ethernet network adapter in your Vista machine is so old that it doesn't support the security protocols required for your upgraded connection.

Still working on above suggestions, but I have had the feeling because of the coincidence that the problems lies where you suggest.  If that turns out to be the case any suggestions ??  Also i connected thru a cable, not wireless.  I have a new inexpensive laptop using the same router using wireless and everything has been fine thus far.

Hi VaMaster54 - Mike:

Did you run the Ookla speed test at https://www.speedtest.net/ from your Vista computer as cryptodan suggested in post # 3?  If you're getting close to the 300 MBps download speed (or whatever speed that Verizon promised) then it's unlikely that your current hardware is the problem.

If a connection cannot be established during the Ookla speed test then let us know the make and model number of both your router/modem and the Ethernet (NIC) network adapter inside your Vista computer.  If the Ookla speed test runs to completion but your download speed is far below the expected 300 MBps then re-boot your router/modem (i.e., unplug the power cable, wait about 30 sec, and then plug the power cable back in) and re-run the speed test to see if your download speed has improved.

What version of Chrome did you install? Has your Vista Pro been modified in some way (extended kernel, TLS 1.2 support)?
Patches? We don't need no stinkin Patches!

maybe you could try calling your service provider and ask them what the problem is they would probably know the answer to whatever the problem is that's causing the issue?
