Today I changed some settings for WU and tried again. The problem persists. This time with different things:

2- I know that there is no more automatic updates for Windows Defender under Vista. But there is also a connection problem  just like with Windows Update. It always used to report "there is no update" before. But now it says "connection not established".

Is something wrong with server? Any help please?

Hi,

There is a problem with the SSL certificate used by the website that makes the browser and the system raise warnings and refuse to connect, I have some doubts that Microsoft will work on fixing that...

Hi devilus:

Further to Abzyx's post, I updated my instructions on page 1 of m#l's thread Updates not working, it has been searching for updates for hours in early August 2020 to warn users performing a clean reinstall of Vista SP2 that they will no longer be able to get Windows Update working again by manually installing Dalai's recommended 4 or 5 "speed up" patches now that Microsoft has deactivated Windows Update for Win XP and Vista as of 03-Aug-2020.

On 28-Jul-2020 Microsoft also announced at SHA-1 Windows Content to be Retired August 3, 2020 that they will be removing all content signed with digital certificates that use SHA-1 hashes from the Microsoft Down Center, but I'm not certain if that includes Vista SP2 standalone installers that are dual-signed with SHA-1/SHA-2.  Fortunately, the first post in greenhillmaniac's 08-Aug-2020 thread Windows Vista Update Repository (until April 2017+) in the MSFN Vista board has a link to his private repository on the MEGA site that includes all the 32-bit (x86 folder) and 64-bit (x64 folder) updates released before the end of extended support in April 2017, including the SP1 and SP2 service packs.  That repository will be especially useful if Microsoft begins removing Vista SP2 updates from the Microsoft Download Center and/or Microsoft Update Catalog

If I understood PIW2's post #3091 of the VIstaForums thread Vista ISO Download, they've already managed to create a set of "fully updated" 32-bit and 64-bit installation ISOs that are slipstreamed with SP1 and SP2 plus all the ~ 200 security updates released as of 11-Apr-2017.  That means that users who performed a clean reinstall of Vista SP2 with one of PIW2's fully updated ISOs would be fully patched to end of extended support without having to run Windows Update.

Kudos to erpster4 for warning others about Microsoft's plan to deactivate Windows Update for Win XP / Vista as of 03-Aug-2020 <here> in the VistaForums.

Original poster devilus did not mention a “clean reinstall of Vista,” but there will be no more “searching for updates for hours”: only the error code mentioned in this thread’s title.

I doubt the legality of distributing “fully updated” custom ISOs, but those with the necessary skill could certainly make one for themselves.

You're right Abzyx. It's installed 2008 (see my signature) and still in good condition. I just check from time to time if Windows Update still works as expected.

Anyway, thanks Imacri.

Perhaps Vista also has SHA-2 tagged updates. That should be enough to do the trick to update Vista SP2 computers via Windows Update. That is, it is hoped that Windows Update will find some updates for Vista. One must attempt keeping the PC on for atleast 72 hours to check this possibility....

Are you ready to test it for 72 hours atleast? Lets keep it on!!

No, extended support for Windows Vista ended in April 2017 without any updates adding SHA-2 support. There are updates for Windows Server 2008 SP2 that add SHA-2 support, and those updates can be installed on Vista; but Microsoft has seen to it that Windows Update is able to discriminate against Vista systems (i.e. you would get no updates at all). The only advantage in adding support for SHA-2 to a Vista system is that it would enable you to manually install security updates for Server 2008 that were released after July 2019 and only have SHA-2 signatures.

Hi Abzyx,

Thanks for clarifying. But the fact is that I always used Vista updates only that kept PC build to 6.0.6002 and NOT to the Vista Server 2008 SP2 build 6.0.6003.

And till July 31, 2020, I could see Win Update end up with the search as No New Updates ( PC is Up to date) with a green tick).

But that does not happen now. Win Update returns with Error 80244019 - with details in log as -- GetConfig Failure.

After clean re=install of Vista SP2 from disk, Win Update downloaded the WUA x.xx.xxx.256 but never got connected to MS to give a clean Green Tick. but instead gave an error 80244019.- GetConfig Failure. Where did I go wrong ?

I was never interested to run any server build updates on Vista after EOL. Vista worked just fine without anything further  than EOL.

Note - I am not security-minded.  Threats don't excite me!

I use Vista Starter 32 Bit because it came loaded with my PC when I bought it in 2009 and the license comes with a condition - for the same hardware only.

Besides I like Vista for its ANTI-PIRACY features like DEP,  and it does not run pirated or cracked software so easily. It was a BEST BUY at a very FAIR PRICE.

No other OS or PC I got to see till date that can make me drop Vista and go for new one. I am not an enthusiast but a stickler of old things and  learn good practices to keep old machines in working condition -- my pass-time!

Correct. Your only mistake is expecting Windows Update to work on Vista even though Microsoft discontinued it more than a month ago. (Windows XP has also been cut off.) I believe you have already found a thread at MSFN with download links for all the Vista updates. When youre finished, you might want to make an image or clone for backup so you wont have to reinstall Vista next time.

I just saw a report from an XP user that Microsoft has recently cut off the self-update of Windows Update Agent as well, and there is no standalone installer for WUA 7.6.7600.256. Oh well: who needs an update agent that only delivers an error code?

Those who are not overly concerned about old threats could perhaps do without all those old patches altogether.

That's good news!

Now I do not have to go through the trouble of sorting and selecting updates between SP2 and EOL for my Vista Starter 32 bit Home PC.

Vista has a good looking desktop with Sidebar introduced for the first time to compete with Mac. Then one fine day, MS gave directive out of vulnerability and security concerns that Sidebar be shutdown. Many new gadgets were being designed by that time. I did not shut the Sidebar ever.

Note - Security-Scare is the best promotion seeking tactics in any workplace. At the same time, all computers are porous and can be taken under surveillance anytime - I am told. And not to mention anything about "certified Ethical hackers" and their doings.

This leaves me and perhaps other Vista and XP users wondering as to why one must Upgrade or migrate to newer versions of Windows when all is well with lower versions? Surely, security is not the concern as security-scare looms larger over newer versions of Windows as well.

Surprisingly, Windows Update appears to be working today (September 26) on Windows Vista (and reportedly also on XP). If you need to update a recent installation, my advice is to ACT FAST! Speed-up patches are presumably still needed for Vista.
