Hi

Trying to do a repair install on a nc6000 Compaq, it's in an endless boot loop. The CD boots fine, loads the files, but when I get to the window where I choose install, recovery console etc. it shuts down. No error messages, nothing.

Thank you for answer.

It's the original HDD.

I removed the battery and that seems to have fixed the power cut. Still working on getting it to boot.

The installer doesn't find any Windows-installation on the HDD, unknown partition, can't do the repair option. I've been trying to learn a bit about TestDisk, after some tries I've copied out some crucial files.

Hi!  Have you tried wiping the disk: I have had times when if the there were remnants of old files, they could play havoc on the other ones.

I don't know if you have the option, but I pull my HDD's and boot it as a slave to a known good system, then reformat it that way: you can also have that machine look for anything bad.  I use this setup, it saves me lots of headaches!!!!

You can also use this if you'd rather not pull your drive:

It will totally sterilize your HDD--YEAH -BOY! :radioactive:

Also, check to make sure you installation disk is free of scratches...

JB

EDIT: are you trying to recover files from it?

I managed to copy out files with TestDisk. I hooked it up to another computer, but the partition is totally broken, not accessible. I'm going to explore TestDisk more, I see that there is some kind of partition rebuilding option. I could just format and install XP again, but hey, where is the fun in that?

It seems like you're facing a challenging situation with your Compaq nc6000. The abrupt shutdown during the repair install process can be due to various reasons. Here are a few things to try:

  1. Check the Hardware: Ensure that your hardware components, such as RAM and hard drive, are in good working condition. Sometimes, hardware issues can lead to system shutdowns.

  2. Boot from a Different Source: If you're using a CD/DVD to boot, consider trying with a bootable USB drive or another installation source to rule out any issues with the CD drive.

  3. BIOS/UEFI Settings: Verify that your BIOS/UEFI settings are configured correctly. Sometimes, improper settings can lead to instability during the installation process.

  4. Corrupted Install Media: Check if the CD itself is in good condition and doesn't have any scratches or damage. A corrupted installation source can lead to issues.

  5. Overheating: Ensure that your laptop isn't overheating. Overheating can result in unexpected shutdowns.Best projector Clean out any dust from the cooling system.

  6. Power Issues: Verify that your laptop's power source is stable and working correctly. A dying or insufficient battery could lead to sudden shutdowns.

  7. Test with Another OS: Try booting your laptop with a different operating system to see if the issue persists. This can help determine if it's related to the repair install specifically.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, you might want to consider seeking professional help or using alternative methods to repair your operating system.

OK, I see, it's the challenge of the thing then!

Make sure your RAM is seated properly too...

Have you pulled the keyboard to make sure it's all clean in there?

Just as some inspiration, here my Presario 700:
