Howdy folks!  I’m working on Compaq iPaq Legacy-Light desktop from 1999: I’ve installed XP Home edition onto it.  It’s a very quirky machine, which is why I love it!  It’s not up-gradable: it has no expansion slots.  I’ve put a 733-Mhz Piii into it with 512 Megs of RAM, and I have a 250-G HDD in it.  It has an 810e chip set.

I have an HP W2072a, 20” monitor that I’d like to use with it.  The problem I’m having is that I can seem to get the proper aspect ratio for it, it’s always distorted, too wide.

The nomenclature I’ve found for it say it will do:

1024 x 768,  8 bit pixel, 256 colors,  60, 70, 72, 75, 85 refresh rates

1024 x 768,  16,   65K,   60, 70, 72, 75, 85

1024 x 768,  24,    16.7M,    60, 70, 72, 75, 85

1152 x 864,  8,   256,   60, 70, 72, 75, 85

1152 x 864, 16,   65K,   60, 70, 72, 75, 85

1152 x 864,  24,   16.7M,   60, 70, 72, 75, 85

1280 x 720,  8,   256,   60, 75, 85

1280 x 720,   16,   65K,   60, 75, 85

1280 x 720,   24,   16.7M,   60, 75, 85

1280 x 960,   8,   256,   60, 75, 85

1280 x 960,   16,   65K,   60, 75, 85

1280 x 960,   24,   16.7M,   60, 75, 85

1280 x 1024,   8,   256,   60, 70, 72, 75, 85

1280 x 1024,   16,   65K,   60, 70, 72, 75, 85

1280 x 1024,   24,   16.7M,   60, 70, 75, 85

1600 x 900,   8,   256,   60, 75, 85

1600 x 900,   16,   65K,   60, 75, 85

1600 x 1200,   8,   256,   60, 70, 72, 75, 85

Is there anything on this site that might help me get the aspect I want?

https://www.philscomputerlab.com/intel-chipset-drivers.html

And what do I need to look at?  I downloaded one of them and I couldn't see anything that looked like what I need/want--I don't understand what they are!

Thanks in advance!

JB

Verify if the below link is for your computer. Click the downloads tab and install the graphics driver for XP. Create a Restore Point first.

https://theretroweb.com/motherboards/s/compaq-ipaq-2-0-legacy-free

The resolution depends on what the graphics chipset can output. 1024x768 is 4:3 which is the ration of the old crt tubes. You may get the black bars on each side of the windows desktop.

Hi John, I should have known you'd respond: you're always helpful!  Unfortunately that's the second version, but shouldn't it work anyway, as it's the same chip set?

Thanks, I'll try it and see what it does...

Thanks for the response : )

This morning I loaded SP-3.

I'm using a Windows 10 machine to retrieve files.

So, when I went to the HP-link you gave for the monitor, it wouldn't let me select the OS: but I did have that file already.  When I had just SP-2, it would read the file, but said that I didn't need it, and wouldn't let me go any further.  Now, with SP-3, it says it's an invalid FAT32 file, I think that's what it said anyway, but it wouldn't read it, is the point.

Currently, the highest resolution I can get is 1280x960, but the aspect is slightly off: I'm wanting to use this to run Adobe Photoshop, so it really matters...

Please advise...

JB

When I said picture with camera I meant of your entire monitor showing the engines.

No, not on the sides.  It fits in the screen, but the image is stretched too much.

That ratio is not available to me on the list: I don't know how to get it.

The manual says it has the capability though:

1600 x 900,   8,   256,   60, 75, 85

1600 x 900,   16,   65K,   60, 75, 85
