I just finished a fresh installation of Windows 98se on a vintage HP Vectra VEi7 computer - it was released in 1999.  Everything is working perfectly - all devices with assigned drivers.  The only issue that I cannot resolve is that the CD Drive icon does not show up in My Computer along with all of the other drives.  I can use Add New Hardware to find the CD Drive - it finds it instantly - and add it.  It then shows up as a drive in My Computer.  But, when I reboot or restart the computer, the CD Drive icon is missing again.

Anyone have a tip on how to get this fixed!

Hi, Welcome to BC.

vintage

I think that sums up the situation.

Try another format and see if it turns up.   Or if have 98 or 95 stick it in see if turns up then again 98SE.     A lot of work.     Why not just make a short cut and see if that keeps it alive.   Are there any drivers

associated to it.  Make/Model of the CD ?

Thank for for the ideas. I will try the shortcut suggestion. I set this computer up with a dual boot - 98SE and XP. The CD Drive shows up always on XP. Dont want to start over again on reinstall. The CD Drive is the OEM HP CD Writer that was on the computer when it was originally equipped.

I have the floppy drive as 1st device. Ill experiment and see if changing the order to CD first makes a difference.

I used the original restore disks OEM for the installation of Windows 98.

Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Go to the branch indicated above, locate the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values. Right click each and select Delete.

Restart

This should take care of it

In the beginning there was the command line.

I have tried all of the above suggestions and have not had any success. As I said before, I set this up as a dual boot system with Win98 and Win XP. The cd drive shows up perfectly on Win XP boots. The cd drive will only show up on Win 98 by doing an Add New Hardware procedure, which finds the cd drive and installs the driver. So odd.
Thank you for all of the suggestions.

I've attached a photo of the Add Hardware window showing the CD Drive being found by Windows 98.  I need to do this each time after starting Windows.  The CD Drive is not remembered when exiting the OS.

I decided to start over. I erased the drive, partitioned it, and installed the dual boot system with Windows 98SE and Windows XP Professional. This time everything installed correctly - all drivers found. CD Drive works perfectly on both OS.
So, not sure what happened to cause the problem, but it is all good now.
