I thought it would be useful to have a thread where those who have customised their desktops can post their work.  Newbies and old hands welcome, and everything from slight customisation to the more extensive overhaul :)

Just one rule though:  PLEASE INCLUDE DETAILS OF THE MODIFICATIONS YOU HAVE MADE - Icon sets, GTK Themes, Fonts, Window Borders etc. as applicable.

If possible include links as well.  Please DON'T just post an image with no comment.

The idea is primarily to show people (particularly newbies and those considering changing from a different OS) the different ways you can customise desktops, and hopefully I'll learn a thing or two as well :)

I suggest using a photo hosting service for the images rather than using BC's bandwidth e.g. imgur.com

To start with here's my slightly tweaked Mint 17.2 Cinnamon desktop :-

W7spz4N.png

Cinnamon Theme:  New Minty
GTK+ ("Control") Theme: Ambiance Flat - Aqua
Window Borders: Ambiance Flat - Aqua
Icon Theme: Vibrancy Colors (Dark-Blue)
(the three above items above from Ravefinity)
Font: SegoUI (an MS font borrowed from Windows on the same machine)
Wallpaper: Just one chosen from the included selection with Mint

Awesome thread idea! I myself haven't really ever modified my desktop look and feel, but was always impressed with the people that made theirs look like it came from a movie. Interested to see what people post! Maybe I'll give it a go myself!

Moderators and above have the ability to change the title. I changed it for you.

One other thing to note:

Jonuk asked me if it would be okay to start this topic here in Linux.
I said, sure go ahead and do it.

Please do not report it for moving to anywhere else. Since this devoted to Linux it is better suited here where it will be seen by Linux users and those who may be thinking of making the switch to Linux.

Hi all,

I use Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and I'm not crazy about the Unity Dash desktop  so installed 8 desktops which I could swap between according to my whim.

Here's a simple guide to the options, I'm sure that it will work on other distros.

Have fun.

jonuk76, If your going to start a Thread like this - you have to at least choose a Non-Included Wallpaper lol, jab jab, just kidding!

Sorry, I got nothing special, about the same as you, just some internal changes and no file re-configs or any custom stuff.  I do however have lots of cool Wallpapers that I set differently from time to time, rotate or whatever.  There are some really cool wallpapers out there, and, KDE - the best distro Mint offers lol - has a great automated Login also with Spaceships flying about etc.  I guessing Mate and Cinnamon has these also.

Not really sure how to use Imgur, please advise?  Okay, think I got it figured out?  Ooo, nice website, nice interface - works well but a bit slow.

Okay, nothing special as said but I tried.  Only some folders (default Dolphin Blue, that I like) under the Lancelot Menu along with Chrome, Opera, Firefox Browser shortcuts.  Nothing special with Dolphin or Chrome Browser either.  I once skinned Chrome but did not like it, I'm all business with my browsers, simple and clean.  One of my favorite Firefox Wallpapers also!

If I don't reply right away it's because I'm waiting for Windows 10 to Update.

I selet Backgrounds, a particular set, then put it o slideshow. That way I have a contstant new pic to look at, and once I've seen them all or eventually, I go to a new set. Those nature pics look great, particularly on a large screen.

Sorry, yes I could have done a bit more than chosen one of the pre-supplied wallpapers, LOL.  Your KDE desktop looks quite a lot different from the default :)

Imgur is simple to use. After you upload you simply copy the "BB Code" URL to automatically put the correct tags on it to display a picture directly in a forum.

This uses less Bandwidth?  I would think the "Direct Link" would use less Bandwidth.

Imgur's bandwidth rather than BC's.

? Which choice uses less Bandwith, all of them?  Seems as though the BBC would not do this and would be one of the others.

It's very simple - hosting an image externally on Imgur (or Tinypic, Photobucket, whoever you like) rather than Bleeping Computer (through the attach file to post option) uses less of Bleeping Computers bandwidth, and also avoids the auto re-sizing feature built into the forums software.
