LM gave me the message that I could upgrade from 20.3 to 21 (Vanessa).

But the process seems to freeze on the system snapshots part of the check.

Before the upgrade, I was unable to activate TimeShift. The message was that another instance of it was running but this was not true. So I tried a complete reinstall starting at 20.1.

Any suggestions appreciated.

You have repos that maybe conflicting.  I would recommend that you delete these:

Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/protonvpn-stable.list
1: deb [arch="all", signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/protonvpn-stable-archive-keyring.gpg] https://repo.protonvpn.com/debian stable main
Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/skype-stable.list
1: deb [arch=amd64] https://repo.skype.com/deb stable main

1: deb-src https://mirror1.ku.ac.th/linuxmint-packages una main upstream import backport

THen try updating, and if  that fails fresh install Mint 21.3.

I guess these active apt repos live at those websites, not as files on my machine?

You list 2 directories over the url, these must be the directories in which the files with the url's reside.

Normal updates kept coming in, and I was able to process those.

Eventually the problem blocking the pre-installation checks was solved I think by subsequent updates including a kernel update.

Therefore I have been able to complete the upgrade.

This obviates the need to delete those repos.

Cryptodan thanks for your help.

Old and custom repos can cause a lot of issues

Thank you for this, Cryptodan. You have helped me a lot.

So I will have to go into "software sources" in linux mint to locate these.

I just saw another upgrade notice, 21.3, Virginia.

so I must try upgrading to that.

sorry for the delay in replying. I thought this thread was solved, so I abandoned it.

Did you install the mintupgrade tool before upgrading?
