Boot USB FreeDOS

Hi all,

Running Windows 10 on Surface Book 2.

I created a bootable USB using Rufus to boot to FreeDOS

I then powered down

I hold down volume- then hit power key

I see a message flash across the terminal ...Not found - but the message is too fast to get all of it

Rufus reported that the USB was created successfully

Any thoughts why I cannot boot to the USB?

Moved from W10 Spt to DOS - Hamluis.

Why are you holding down the volume? Just start computer into Windows 10 and then RESTART your computer. During restart get into your boot menu.

I just downloaded and booted to this OS. Man, is it old. It has not been updated since 2016.

I tried getting into EUFI on Surface Book 2 and changed the boot order

1. USB

2. Windows

3. Ubuntu

It did not work, it still booted to Windows

Seems something is missing from bootable USB created by Rufus.

I also tried booting to USB from Windows 10

Settings

Update & Security

Recovery

Restart Now

USB

But that did not work either...eventually booted to Windows.

Make sure SecureBoot is disabled. If the flash drive is MBR then you can't boot from UEFI unless the Surface has an option for Legacy or CSM boot.

Was there some reason you needed to boot to FreeDos?

Edit: Even if you boot FreeDos you will not be able to access any of the files on the GPT HDD.

it does not have to bee FreeDOS

I wanted an option with creating an ISO

In the end, I am trying to delete MS Office folder from C:\Program Files (x86) on advice from Microsoft to run Office Deployment Tool to change update channel to

BetaChannel or "Insider Fast"

The ODT would not run correctly so MS suggested deleting all traces of Office and running ODT

I tried deleting the folder, but it always fails when Windows is running.

All Office applications are not running.

If you can boot Ubuntu then you should be able to delete the folder.

FYI, you need to disable FastStartup in Windows 10 first in order to get write access using Ubuntu.

I'm not sure how to access Windows files in Ubuntu. I know if you boot Mint Cinnamon which I have experience with you would click on the Computer icon and in the left pane you would see your HDD icon which would open a File Manager of your Windows partition.

With Windows 10 you can easily make a bootable USB of Mint by mounting the iso of Mint. Right click the iso > Mount. Copy all the files to a USB flash drive formatted FAT32. Open File Manager in Windows and right click the mounted drive > eject to unmount.

Remember to disable FastStartup in Windows.

Solved.

Here is what I did

1. Created Windows 10 ISO using Windows Media Creation Tool

2. Created bootable USB with ISO image using Rufus

3. Disabled BitLocker Encryption in Windows Control Panel

4. Changed Boot Order to USB first

5. Restart

6. At Windows 10 Splash, I hit [Shift]+[F10] key to launch cmd

7. I navigated to C:\Program Files (x86)

8. I deleted the Microsoft Office Folder using >> rmdir /s "Microsoft Office"

I removed the USB and booted back to Windows 10. All appears to be working correctly expcept Microsoft Office which is what I was after.

Tuxera and NTFS-3G was what you want to install.
