I'm looking to get a laptop that'll run DaVinci resolve relatively comfortably.

I think I have found the specifications I need, but I cannot seem to find a laptop that fits (table below)

cpu   ryzen 7       processor   6 cores       operating system   win 11             suport open CL 1.2 or CUDA 2.0           graphics card specification   8 GB VRAM with OpenCL 1.2 or CUDA 11 support             screen resolution   1920x1080       ram   16GB DDR4 RAM       ssd   512

but where is the best place to look?

I've found this in Costco-UK (attached) but cannot seem to find the VRAM of the GPU

Thanks,

Reggie.

Has an RTX 3050m which unfortunately only has 4GB of VRAM.

Couple of options for you to peruse below;

MSI Katana 17 Intel Core i7 8GB 1TB SSD RTX 2050 144Hz 17.3 Inch Windows 11 Gaming Laptop

Gigabyte G5 Intel Core i5 16GB 512GB RTX 4060 144Hz 15.6 Inch FHD Windows 11 Gaming Laptop

The MSI would benefit from upgrading the RAM to either 16 or 32GB.

Hi BC Adviser,

I responded last week via my phone, but it didn't appear to work, so apologies for the delay.

the MSI Katana 17 is out as I wanted max size of 15.6 inch, sorry, forgot to include in my original description.

I've watched a few reviews of the Gibabit G5, which looks like it'll have the computing power, but has a really bad screen/speakers. I know its at the budget end of the market, so compromise has to be found; I can't however find anything about battery life. I know this depends on usage, but it makes me nervous, as it doesn't have the ability to charge via PD3. I also cannot find out if it supports open CL 1.2 or CUDA 2.0.

Whenever i google "GeForce RTX 4060 8GB " I get the desktop version, which I'm not sure has the same performance specifications.

No worries, you at least got the info and then got back to us.

Well that's a first, a gamer that doesn`t want a 17" screen  :)

Gigabyte review including battery life info here

GPU benchmarks and specs here

Regarding the battery life, for the spec that you require you will struggle to find any notebook that has an exceptionally long battery life and there is a very good reason for this, gaming notebooks that have a discrete GPU must have the Windows Power Plan set to High Performance or the discrete GPU does not get the power that it needs to be able to function and the notebook as a consequence will revert back to using the on die video from the CPU.

In addition to the above, because of the previously explained power demand, it is not practical to use gaming spec notebooks when they are not being powered directly from the wall socket, the GPU power demand sucks the life out a battery in no time.

Thanks for your explanation, I'm not intending to use it for games, mainly occasionally video editing (1/2 hrs mobile max) whilst sat in the car waiting for my son to finish his many weekly activities. This is why the PD3 charging would be useful.

It is ok but pricey, I also don't like it when they don`t tell you if the RAM is two sticks of 8GB or one 16GB stick, this affects performance and to correct it only being the one stick would require purchasing a second stick and upgrading it yourself.

Gaming, video editing, anything graphic intensive requires the High Performance profile but if only for a short duration as in 30 minutes or so it would be fine.

You are welcome btw  :)

I'm shocked you think Lenovo LOQ 15IRH8 Gaming Laptop - 15.6in FHD 144Hz, GeForce RTX 4060, Intel Core i5, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD | very.co.uk is a bit pricy, its 849 from very and the Gibabyte G5 is 847 from amazon, am I missing something?

They are both expensive compared to the 17" MSI but I had to give you two options that met the 8GB VRAM required by DaVinci resolve

I've really appreciated your guidance, it has helped me clarify my needs.

I've found a deal that I'm happy with, so this thread can now be closed.

Thanks for your help BC Adviser.
