I have three basic requirements for my next laptop keyboard:

Touchpad. Either no touchpad at all (requiring an external mouse/touchpad) or one that is above the keyboard. I cannot use a keyboard with a touchpad below the keys. I am sure the problem is my poor typing skills, but I keep brushing the touchpad, which moves the cursor to some random place causing all kinds of chaos. I know I can disable it and get an external mouse, but I still don't want it there at all leaving more space for the keys. I also know I can get an external keyboard, but that doesn't work so well when traveling.

Function Keys. A completely separate row of keys for the function keys (not shared with other functions such as sound, brightness, etc.) that has to be activated by the Fn key. This is IMNSHO one of the dumbest designs in laptops.

Touch and Feel. A touch and feel like the old Selectric typewriters. In my opinion, most laptop keyboards are unusable junk.

Are there any laptops with these requirements???

If not, any recommendations for external keyboards (wireless)?

Thanks

As regards the first, I have an Asus laptop with Asus Smart Gesture installed.

That has a setting which turns off/disables the touchpad if a mouse is connected, and enables it again when the mouse is unplugged.

I'm not too bothered about the dual-function function keys, (and they can be set to just basic function keys if wanted).

For me though a number pad is a must. I also have a Toshiba laptop without a number pad and find that omission a bit of a pain.
It's all down to space though, it's a smaller laptop so less room unless it had tiny keys.

I find the Asus keyboards OK, not too firm but not too mushy either.

Of course keyboards are subjective, the only way to know for sure if it suits you is to go in store and try the 'feel' of the keyboard on the model that you are thinking of buying.

Cynthia Moore,

I have a couple of Dell computers (8930 SE Desktop and 15 7590 Laptop).  I am not impressed with Dell desktop keyboards at all, so I replaced mine six months ago with a Logitech MX Key for Business.  You can use it with three different devices.  It is a superb keyboard.  Just after I purchased it, my nephew was here and used my computer to sent his Dad a message.  He immediately noticed, and remarked, on how great a keyboard it was.

It is expensive, but it is the best keyboard that I have ever used.

I have no affiliation with Logitech. I love the keyboard and their M510 mice.  Best computer mouse on the market, if you ask me.  I hate trackpads, so I have their mice for both of my Dell computers, because the Dell desktop mice are not that great either.

Have a great weekend.

Regards,

Phil

You can also turn up the sensitivity on the touchpad, this normally solve the issue where you touch it and the cursor jumps to a different spot on the screen.

Some laptops you can disable the function keys and have them perform as normal keys. The only place this might be an issue is using the PRT SCR key.

I don't think you're going to find what you're looking for on a laptop, or not one that is remotely affordable.
