I think this practice really belongs to another age. It has no place in today's internet age

Their subsciption management page does not allow you to actually manage anything pertaining to your subscription, their help page is outdated and their instructions are all wrong, and if you want to edit your billing information you'll have to wait until 30 days before it expires. They will also censor auto-renewal questions on their forums.

Dick move eset.

Seems like all companies are going in that direction these days.

If you are using Windows 10/11, there is always the option to just use Microsoft Defender Antivirus (Windows Defender). I explain why in this topic. Also see my comments about Windows Defender Antivirus in Choosing an Anti-Virus Program (Post #2).

If "everyone" is doing this then it goes to show how irrelevant and desperate they have become as a service.

There is no excuse for this sort of practice. It is considered a dark pattern in UX and ultimately erodes trust with consumers.

If everyone does it, the customer has two choices....participate or choose not to be a customer.

I buy an ESET retail key at a brick and mortar store - usually deeply discounted several times a year, too.

Saves me the hassle of e-shopping and giving out my financial particulars.

i usually use a disposable one-time virtual card for online purchases.

but i have used eset in the past and i had them in a completely different light.

i wouldn't be caught high using other shady av products but eset always struck me as the respectable kind. transparent, professional, no nonsense.

the irony is that i would have likely continued using their services i just wanted to consider my options upon renewal. now they pretty much have decided for me.

I still have ESET on one of my old Windows 7 computers (and Emsisoft on another)....I will continue to use it despite this practice.

However, on my Windows 11 laptops, Windows Defender works fine.

No it was not junk...it just wasn't very good.

The original Windows Defender was released with Windows 7 and Windows Vista as their built-in anti-malware (anti-spyware) component intended to supplement your anti-virus program, not replace it. Initially offered as a free download for Windows, XP, the anti-malware protection provided by Windows Defender in Windows 7 and Vista was weak, meaning it did not provide comprehensive protection and could not prevent, detect and remove many threats at the time. As such, many folks keep it disabled and used a more effective third-party alternative.

Windows Defender was superseded by Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) which was the first anti-virus product from Microsoft and offered protection against a wider range of malware. Microsoft Security Essentials disabled and replaced Windows Defender if users made the choice to install it.

Microsoft released a different version of Windows Defender for Windows 8, 10, 11 but continued to use that same name for several more years. Although it used the same name, Windows Defender (now called Microsoft Defender Antivirus is not the same as Windows Defender in Windows 7/Vista/XP since it integrates both anti-virus and anti-malware protection, and provides a higher level of protection against malware than Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) provided on older operation systems plus enhanced protection against rootkits and bootkits and protection against potentially unwanted programs if that feature is enabled.

I personally would never trust windows defender.

Yes, it has become A LOT better than it used to be, but its still not good enough compared to the paid AV's. Also it can be nuked with one CMD command which is a big no no in my book. 3rd party AV's are way harder to nuke for an attacker.

TPSC did a test of windows defender for those interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulm0lZIqYp0&t=498s

Not a bad score, and yes its probably good enough for the average user. If people decide to use WD as their AV, having MBAM running alongside it is a must if you ask me.

I have been using ESET since version 8, and never had any infections (apart from when I was stupid and allowed a file to run even though ESET told me it was bad).

About them making it harder to cancel their auto-renewal is not a big deal for me. I don't use it. I don't like having things on auto-renewal and getting a "surprise charge" on my credit card. I prefer to know exactly what goes out and when.

Is Microsoft Defender Antivirus (Windows Defender) Good Enough?  The results are mixed but more positive than negative.

Note: I found a few reviews which said Windows Defender was not very good but those sites were pushing Norton and Total AV. In fact, while reading these reviews I encountered several advertising links and popups prompting me to purchase those products.

to me its a matter of principle.

i find it hard to trust companies that engage in these shenanigans.

makes you wonder what they actually stand for.

It's a matter of principle for many folks in addition to the cost factor which is why a lot of our members have chosen to use Microsoft Defender Antivirus (Windows Defender).

Since 2019 Microsoft Defender has received very good test results for protection on a yearly basis from AV-TEST, an independent IT-Security Institute. Those results were surprising to securty experts who perform reviews and conduct their own testing.
