Hi, it happens for all sites and services.

1) they get your info and stuff and start spamming your contact list masquerading as you with junk or attachments that hold malware or worse.

They get enough info they can try to slip you something that will start ransomware.

Take control as they just like your name/handle.

(lost my twitter that way, they forgot password so email came back to me which allowed me to log in and change and undo what they did and have never used it since)

2) they are now in a internal aspect of the mail client which now lets them try getting in deeper to the site.

You can check your email and passwords if have been found : https://haveibeenpwned.com/

You can also use Mozilla Monitor to check if your Hotmail address has been breached.

Good luck! :)

They try your [username] + [old password] on many services to see if it will work.  This is called Credential Stuffing.  If you see many attempts, they try other password variations.  It's kind of an educated guess brute force.
