OK, I ran an ACER aspire for about 13 years and had no problems with it at all.  I know they don't have the best reputation but, I liked it.  After being warned that Windows 7 wasn't the most secure online OS I decided to get a new computer so I bought a new Acer Aspire with an SSD.  It worked fine for a while but then I started experiencing horrible keystroke lag.  The new machine came with a 256 gb SSD and it is indicating that it has about 50% free space at this point.

Recently I started doing a lot of eBaying and am creating and storing a good number of hi-ish res graphics.  I began to wonder if I was overloading the SSD.  I removed the 1tb HDD from the old machine (I know, a 1tb machine from 13 years ago?) and installed it in the new machine as a separate drive.  I swapped some of the larger files to it but the problem remains.

Videos will stall when I am watching them.  The sound will keep on as normal but the graphic stalls for about 10 seconds and then jumps ahead.  If the computer is feeling particularly stupid I can put my cursor on the volume slide to drag it left or right.  The slide does not respond smoothly but will jerk up or down after a correction, delayed a second or two.

I am using a nice Logitech K350 wireless keyboard that I really like but it's beginning to show signal in-continuity.  A wired keyboard seems to work fine but two wireless units I am using don't.  If I an put the Logitech keyboard right beside it's own dongle, it works better but having done that, and having said that, my keyboard response time has got way worse since I started typing this text.  It it was just the keyboards, I would be barking up that tree but with the video stalling I think it's something else.  I even had a graphic image download the other day like it was through and old dial up modem, jerking down a bit at a time until it was loaded.

I opened the box of this Acer Aspire and noticed it has nothing but laptop parts in it.  Fortunately there was a 3 1/2" slot for the old HDD and there was an extra SATA plug and power cable for it so that was easy.  Perhaps because of my slow computer I used a disc erase program that took 5 hours to erase the HDD.

So, terrible input latency, keystroke lag, general crappy performance, have I missed anything?

Hopefully somebody can help.

Thanks,

Hello, welcome and thank you for the detailed problem description.

-- Can you please tell us the EXACT model name/number of the new computer?
-- Are there any yellow or red flags on any devices in Windows Device Manager?

-- Also, to provide a bit more "data", please do this:

FIRST:

1. Please download, install and run the Free version of Speccy from here: https://www.ccleaner.com/speccy.
2. Then, go to File > Publish Snapshot
3. Click YES > Copy to Clipboard
4. Then please post the LINK to the report by pasting it into your next reply.

NEXT:

1. Please download and install MiniToolBox from here: https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/minitoolbox/
2. Place a checkmark in the following boxes:

List Last 10 Event Viewer Errors
List Installed Programs
List Problematic Devices
List Users, Partitions and Memory size

3. Click “GO”
4. Please post the text results here by pasting them in your next reply in this thread.

Thanks

Thanks Moxie

It's an Acer XC 830 series, model D17W6.

Another bit of historical info.  About 3 weeks or a month ago I was experiencing periods when my CPU fan would overspeed for perhaps 10 or 15 minutes.  That has quit recently and the fan does still work.

I would uninstall/reinstall the troublesome Acer registration software...or just uninstall it.  If I chose to reinstall it, I would try to keep it updated.

Hi, this : Defender Error code: 0x8024402c shows that Defender can not connect to the Microsoft Server due to NordVPN.  Figure it out.

Again another NordVPN Error : The server could not bind to the transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_

Suggest get rid of it, is a pain in the butttt (IMHO)

8gig of ram these days is small, suggest 16gig.

You say new system but this OS was installed somewhere around 2022, your Driver Support Page shows this system has been around since 2018.

If you thought this was brand new you got ripped off with a 8yr old system.

If the Hard Drive you put into this was the other ones Boot Drive did you delete all 3 partitions and format it so it would not have drivers or info from the previous system ?

Since this is a 8yr old system there is not much that can be done to improve this.

If it is a Malware caused issue what have you done to check ??

Note : it is Possible trying to update since it can not get connected to the Windows Servers you are having some issue which is diverting ram.

As was mentioned there is no need for this to be connecting to ACER since there are no 2023 drivers available means there is no support.

https://www.acer.com/us-en/support/product-support/Aspire_XC-830  Save your drivers to a USB Drive.

AcerRegistrationBackGroundTask.exe, as can see in the MTB Report is causing your issue.  It possibly can not connect also due to NordVPN.

Remove NordVPN.

OK, some good info here.  Thanks, I will start digging into it.  I do know that Nord VPN interfered with my shaw webmail all the time.  Logging into Shaw with the VPN working got me kicked out every time and it invalidated my password each time.  I had to quit using nord and frankly, it's been sitting unused for months.  I'll get rid of it.

New machine means new to me but I don't think I've been using the Acer machine for much more than 18 months so that would match the 2022 installation date but I'm not quite sure what the 2018 driver support reference means.  Interesting what you say about the outdated system.  Like I say, it looks like all laptop parts inside this cabinet.  Maybe Acer is refurbing. old laptops and selling them in new cabinets as new.  Hmm.  I got this at Staples and it was selling for what, right around the $200 mark?  Don't quote me.

I'll try to address some of your other points:

I completely wiped the old HHD so I assume there would be no OS left on it and it shouldn't be interfering with anything.  Plus, I just put it in two day ago and this problem is months old.

Louis, I don't know what Acer registration software is really but I didn't make any attempt to register this machine online with Acer so if it's software just made for that, I can get rid of it.

I have not run a malware program, no.

BC Advisor I see your on the coast.  I'm on the island.

2018 = when drivers were released as per the Support Page URL they show running drivers from 2018.    This system when google release date was mid year 2021 released so

there are the ages of drivers vs age started being sold.

"I completely wiped the old HHD"  So did you delete the 2 other partitions ?  There is if had a UEFI Partition if had a UEFI Bios Support, a System Partition, and then C:

So where these partitions deleted or merged back to C:  Check from Start Menu : Disk Management

Howdy islander :=}, yup on the Coast, was on the Peninsula until a couple yrs ago.

Possibly this program : Care Center Service

From Post 7 : "AcerRegistrationBackGroundTask.exe, as can see in the MTB Report is causing your issue"

Can not merge or delete partitions if there is now stuff you need on it.

Oh I could always put those files back on thumb drives and clear the HDD again if that would be helpful.  I'm also wondering if it might be worthwhile to simply update the old Acer machine.  Maybe not.  It's got to be 20 years old but I don't know how much of a limitation that is.

AcerRegistrationBackGroundTask.exe, if not registered with Acer then this program will always come up.

Choose to Register with Acer or figure out what program of Acer's it is in and uninstall it.  It will continue to be a problem unless do something with it.

Can do it this way as well : https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/682110/why-do-i-get-this-popup-acer-registration-background-task-has-stopped-working

For info Only : https://www.shouldiremoveit.com/acer-registration-6573-program.aspx

Did you look at it with from Start Menu : Disk Management  ?? as was asked with Check it will show you a graphical of the drive and if there is more than one Partition on it.

It is also the tool to delete and to merge partitions.
