Box office

Cloud storage provider Box is down in a 'critical' outage, preventing customers from accessing their files.

The outage started at approximately 9 AM ET, with the company stating that it is a critical outage impacting logins, uploads, downloads, and API calls.

"Our team is continuing to investigate and have confirmed this issue is impacting all Box Services," reads a message on the Box status page.

"Users attempting to use Box may see errors, timeouts, but for the most part services will be completely inaccessible. We will provide additional information as it becomes available."

When attempting to log in or access the service, users are met with an HTTP error 503, stating, "This page isn't working. account.box.com is currently unable to handle this request."

Customers have taken to social media to share their frustration as they no longer have access to any files stored on the cloud service.

"I can not overstate how this outage is impacting our business- during the busiest time of the year! My entire team (and many of our clients) are completely unable to get anything done!," tweeted a Box customer.

BleepingComputer contacted Box to learn more about the outage, but a reply was not immediately available.

Update 12/15/23 1:21 PM ET: Box says that they have remediated the issue and customers can access cloud services again.

"Our team has taken steps to remediate this issue and seeing improvement across all Box Services. We are continuing to monitor for any additional impact as services return back to full functionality," reads an updated status message.

BleepingComputer can confirm that accessing stored content appears to be working again.

Box still has not provided any update as to what caused the outage.

This is a developing story.
