Cloning and imaging are two different processes. Cloning fails often. I have never had an image fail, I have done 100's of them on a wide array of systems.

I have had an image fail but don't recall ever having a clone fail. Now I just make clones because they are easier to make and easier and faster to get my machine up and running again. If I were to make a recommendation it would be to do both images and clones.

I have never had an image fail on creation or restoration and have never cloned my system, either. I automatically create my weekly disk images on a fixed schedule, usually every Saturday at 02:00 PM with Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office Essentials.
I save them onto an external drive, which I use with a USB flash drive running in the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) to restore my system whenever needed for testing and fixing purposes, and it always works well for eight years and counting.
However, please note that I have NO affiliation with Acronis because I am only a home user. And I am NOT trying to encourage you to switch disk imaging software from Macrium Reflect to Acronis. So you can safely continue to use THAT software.
As for which method to use to back up one's entire system, it is up to the user to clone or image and is also based on experience. But, it is even essential to automatically validate and test the backup to ensure it works when you need to restore your computer.
Good luck!
