Nope. Blue screen is back. I put the computer to sleep and came back to find it running with a black screen stating " press any key to restart" which I did but didn't do anything. My guess it was trying to load the update I had rolled back. I held the on button down to force a restart which then came up with another blue screen. It rebooted and is on now but is hanging on the password prompt. I'm going to try the update rollback again as it was no problems until I put it to sleep instead of turning off.

Hi, so consider this that you have corrupted data or bad ram modules : https://www.howtogeek.com/15140/what-is-hiberfil.sys-and-how-do-i-delete-it/
So turn this off as well : https://www.windowscentral.com/how-disable-windows-10-fast-startup /11 and WHY !!!
As well in BIOS turn off anything that speeds up the boot such as example ASUS Fast Boot for the same reasons as above.
So did you consider your Options, Did you run Memtest and what where the results. Unless provide info we do not know what is going on.

I tried to create a USB bootdisk for the Memtest but, clearly, this is above my paygrade. There are pages and pages of instruction. None of which make sense to me. So until I've spent a few days reading everything until I sort of understand it is going to take some time.

It is a 3 step Process and can see Video if need for how to make bootable USB for Memtest86 : https://www.memtest86.com/tech_creating-window.html

I've never used sleep/hibernation and for the very reason that you are encountering now, same with updates, I never let the computer update unless I can be around to keep a check on things, if something were to go wrong I would know what it was and how to deal with it.
Hibernation is known to be problematic, no need to go elsewhere if you follow the canned steps below;
To disable Hibernation:

I appreciate everyone's help here but I have concluded that it is a hopeless cause at this point. After attempting to run various diagnostics it's clear that nothing works. The Dell BIOS update had everything working for a day then I put it to sleep instead of shutting down. I came back later to find it was running with the lid down and very loud. It's back to the black screen searching for a drive before startup. Then it randomly goes to blue screen and attempts to restart. Eventually I can get it up and running but it randomly goes to blue screen and off again. I am getting the idea the hard drive is on it's last legs which might explain why none of the diagnostics seem to work. I tried to run the memtest but it partitioned the drive every time so i reformatted to NTSB and it didn't partion but it did nothing upon booting. My previous bootdisk I made also does nothing. Repair startup behavior does nothing. As much as I'd like to think I have a fair idea what I'm doing. I don't and the frustration has told me it is time to bail and give it up. Thanks for your time.

Based on those dumps I think it's very likely that your problems are caused either by bad RAM or by a bad system drive. RAM is by far the easiest to test. Memtest86 is not that hard to use if you take your time - AND USE A DIFFERENT PC TO MAKE THE BOOTABLE USB DRIVE. Your PC is suspect so don;t use that to make a Memtest86 USB. If it's easier for you then run the Windows memory diagnostic. It's nowhere near as thorough as Memtst86 but if that fails your RAM you'll know where the problem lies.
To run the Windows memory diagnostic type the command mdsched into the Run command box, the memory diagnostic window will open. Click the 'restart now and check for problems'. You can check the results of the test in the Event Viewer...
Enter the command eventvwr into the Run command box., The Event Viewer will open.
In the left-hand pane expand the Windows Logs section.
Right-click on the System entry and select Find from the menu.
In the find box enter MemoryDiagnostics-Result and click Find Next. The memory diagnostic test result will be highlighted, double-click it to display.
ALternaticely, right-click on the memory diagnostic entry and select Copy details as text and then paste them into NOtepad. UPlaod that text file for us to look at.
