Hi, There is a was a new update from MS that did that.

I see you got the answer for your question.  https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/icons-keep-re-arranging-whenever-i-connect-the/332bde6a-6b73-463e-b06a-c7a8bdcf3533

Did this work out for you : https://www.thewindowsclub.com/keep-desktop-icons-from-moving-when-undocking

You will continue maybe to have that happen.   I change my screen resolution to play a game and all my icons move.  When finished I set the resolution back and they are all back in the same place.

LOL, not a big frustration for me.

Thank you PKS - Huge frustration for me (I must be somewhere on the spectrum LOL).

I've seen those articles but wasn't sure those support applications were trustworthy.

Things have been OK the last few days.  I forget where the option was, but there was a box I had to un-check that tethered icon layout to Windows theme.  Once that was removed, it stopped blowing up the layout upon restart.

Update:  No BSOD's to report since the steps in this thread were completed.

Hi, that is good news on the BSOD's.  Glad is working.

Ya, I have a system been sitting on for a month I can not figure out the error code.

There is in TO Canada Computers. I use them out here they used to be NCIX if that means anything to you.  A resurrection after bankruptcy.

No idea about @0lds0d he has some links to other places for laptops.  I lost the links and cannot remember the Topic.  He is in your neck of the woods.  If he drops by I hope will leave you the info as to where those places were.

Also hope he let's me know again. Some reason has messaging turned off on me.

@Pkshadow Canada Computers is actually where I purchased the machine in question in this thread.

Varying levels of competency at that vendor; An employee there helped me to downgrade this machine to Win 10 upon purchase.  My impression is that given the pay scale, they know enough to be dangerous & can really be a hit or miss.

Needless to say, the expertise that you and others have shown on this forum has blown them out of the water to be perfectly honest.

Hi, thanks :=}

If under warranty.....

Here is 50 -80 bucks for a diagnosis/repair or info to walk out he door.  I sometimes use them but do buy my parts from them most of the time.

So if do have more BSOD's again upload the Dump Files.

@Pkshadow | @ubuysa,

Hope you gents are doing well & can assist.

Received an alert that my graphics drivers needed to be updated (to V546.33).  Attempted through GeForce Exp., installation would fail.

I then went through the processes PKS walked me through in post #9 in this thread; I am trying to install post video card driver wipe, and the install is still failing.

I wiped again and tried to install the previous version of the driver (directly from post #9 which worked previously) and again it is failing.

I seem to be unable to get any Nvidia driver to install onto this machine now.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, that was version 18.06..

Try 18.07 from the actual website.  The one previously was a link to that 18.06 version.

Need to go through process again as it is directed in Safe Mode.

Note if can not change Video Drivers is also a reason that there maybe malware using your Video Card.

Please run and install Malwarebytes  if you can not download it that is a sign of possible malware : so try :  https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/ and do not skip the last step which requires a reboot when ready. Is also a good stand alone can run any time you feel like it :=}

NVIDIA reset settings :

  1. Right-click on your desktop and select Nvidia Control Panel.
  2. Click Manage 3D Settings.
  3. In the upper-right corner, click Restore Defaults.

Thank you PKS.

Ran Malwarebites & Adwarecleaner; no issues or finds.  Appears to be clean.

For reference, this is the driver I was trying to install:  https://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/216929/en-us/

For a 4080 Notebook card on Windows 11.  When I try to install, it fails (whether independently or through GeForce).

Not sure I'm clear on what you mean by 18.07 version; this seems to be 546.33  WHQL

I couldn't get Nvidia drivers to install whatsoever last night, so I ended up doing a system restore to the day before, and am now on my November revision of the driver that you helped me implement earlier in this thread (and again, when I tried to install that old driver yesterday post driver wipe, it didn't work).

Sorry for got the link to DDU to uninstall your drivers : https://www.wagnardsoft.com/content/Display-Driver-Uninstaller-DDU-V18070-Released

When in doubt : install the Video drivers off of the ASUS Support Page : NVIDIA Graphic Driver   Version V31.0.15.4624  Date : 2023/11/29 though this seems to be the Driver only by name and not the full pack.

Then turn off in Geforce Experience Updates.   Your not a full blown NVIDIA but are ASUS Geforce.  Note the difference between Version numbers.

Also when I look up your card : GeForce RTX 4080 Laptop Drivers what I find is : Driver Version: 546.33 - Release Date: Tue Dec 12, 2023 WHQL Game ready : download will start when clicked :

https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/drivers/results/216929/

This is not found on a page like you gave so will provide the link :https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/news/geforce-rtx-4080-game-ready-driver/  which is a actual link that loads your detail into the search : https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/drivers/  Note if just enter the Search will have to enter your details :

1) Geforce

2) Geforce RTX 40 Series Notebook

3) Geforce RTX 40 Series Laptop

4) Win 11

5) English

6) All (as get the Studio Driver in the Results as well) can choose WHQL.

So suggest bookmark these pages.   Let us know how you make out :-}

Would also suggest running : fro a DOS Command Prompt from START | type cmd.exe into the start search box | RIGHT-click on cmd.exe | select "Run as Administrator" then Copy/Paste --> :
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth command then Enter if it finds problems then reboot. (Completed Successfully : means reboot)
&

then
After : please Open another Admin Command Prompt and please run Copy/Paste --> SFC /SCANNOW into the Dos window or Powershell and Enter.  (If fixes anything reboot)

PKS,

Thanks to everything you've taught me, what you've outlined in your last two posts is exactly what I did that led to the failed installs :)

If you note, the link you provided to download from the Nvidia page is exactly the link I provided you in my previous post (proud of myself, haha).

I also used the DDU uninstaller first before any of this began, and also ran through the RestoreHealth and ScanNow functions (I followed the process you outlined earlier in this thread verbatim).

Still, failed driver install.

I'm reluctant to try again in light of what I experienced. Perhaps there is a bug in this release?

I'll have to try it eventually, but perhaps I should set a system restore point before doing so.

IF I go through what you've outlined again and it still fails (forcing me to system restore), what would you suggest at that point?  Ever seen something like that before?

Have you installed the VGA Drivers for the laptop from your Support Page. ??  Not the NVIDIA drivers.

As for the same page not to sure about that. One I looked at was black and green and I do not have Dark Mode set for websites.

The below is the support page I've used in the past (G634JZ, Windows 11 in drop downs).  I can't say that I see anything that states VGA drivers?

https://rog.asus.com/us/laptops/rog-strix/rog-strix-scar-16-2023-series/helpdesk_download/

A moment ago, I checked 'MyAsus' for updates, and it notified me of a NVIDIA update, although not the same version number as NVIDIA was stating...  Tried it, went through the cycle and restarted (didn't state any errors?), but when I check the version number via device manager, it's still the old revision.  Looks like it still didn't take, and the update is not going away in MyAsus - it's still suggesting that I need to complete an update.

I've created a restore point so I can trial the DDU process again, but as mentioned, I did exactly what you suggested prior to chiming in on the forum and it didn't work, which is why I'm apprehensive to try again without a better understanding of what the culprit might be.  "If it ain't broke, don't fix it..."  Don't want to create more problems for myself when things are seemingly running fine after everything we've been through ...  Although, I can't have a machine that refuses to take updates, so this does need to be debugged (unless the issue is with the update and it will resolve itself with a future version).
