The one I reported before that was so slow, was one that Failed to install by itself, so we had to Clear the "Update Cache" and restart the process.  I've seen Upgrades take 1-3.5 hours, and that is After the Download, and not exclusively 1803.  Perhaps faster on better machines but have not been exposed to those machines.  Most my machines are not up to current tech.  The others all have Clean Installs on them.  I won't pretend to know what is going on behind the scenes, I just know what I see.  I'm sure there are a few factors at play when one takes such a long time but that doesn't ease the pain LOL.  I would love to see how fast some newer equipment will upgrade.

If I don't reply right away it's because I'm waiting for Windows 10 to Update.

I will let you know soon. After 8 years, I am upgrading my 980x system. I will have a 16 core i9 7960x Intel chip,m.2 ssd, 32 Gb ram, GTX 1080 vid card, all on a Gigabyte Designaire Mobo. It arrives on 7/25 or so and on the next major update, I'll time it.

The very first thing you should always do after setting up a system? Have a valid backup image of your drives.

I read this post of mine and it rubbed me wrong as it seems to be a bit pompous. Let me further explain. I have been sober now for 5 years, I saved up the money to get this machine with the money I would have spent on booze. Otherwise, I would not be able to afford a machine like this. (Not that it really matters but I felt the need to clarify) :)

Sometimes things don't come out the way we want them to.  I assumed you didn't mean to be pompous.  Must be hard to stay sober up there in Spring Break land lol.

I'm 46 so the Spring Break I avoid like the plague. :)

If you are running Wifi you can Turn On Metered Connection in "Network and Internet"

Go: Menu > Settings > Network and Internet > Change Connection Properties > Set as metered connection: Turn it On.

Apparently you can do this with Ethernet also using this tool Winaero Tweaker but I have never done so, so you would be advised to wait and see what others are doing.  And, it would be better if you started a New Thread in the Support page.

Thanks, pc

Improvements and fixes This update includes quality improvements. No new operating system features are being introduced in this update. Key changes include: Addresses an issue that causes the Video Settings HDR streaming calibration slider to stop working. This is caused by a conflict with the panel brightness intensity settings configured by certain OEMs.  Addresses streaming compatibility issues with certain live TV streaming content providers.  Addresses an issue where media content previously generated by Media Center doesn't play after installing the Windows 10 April 2018 update.  Addresses an issue in which SmartHeap didn't work with UCRT.  Addresses performance regression in App-V, which slows many actions in Windows 10.  Addresses an issue that causes Appmonitor to stop working at logoff if the Settingstoragepath is set incorrectly.  Addresses an issue that causes Appmonitor to stop working at logoff, and user settings are not saved.  Addresses an issue where client applications running in a container image don't conform to the dynamic port range.  Addresses an issue where the DNS server might stop working when using DNS Query Resolution Policies with a "Not Equal" (NE) condition.  Addresses an issue with T1 and T2 custom values after configuring DHCP failover.  Addresses an issue that causes the latest versions of Google Chrome (67.0.3396.79+) to stop working on some devices.  Addresses issues with the Remote Desktop client in which pop-up windows and drop-down menus don't appear and right-clicking doesn't work properly. These issues occur when using remote applications.  Addresses an issue that causes a connection failure when a Remote Desktop connection doesn’t read the bypass list for a proxy that has multiple entries. Addresses an issue that may cause Microsoft Edge to stop working when it initializes the download of a font from a malformed (not RFC compliant) URL. Addresses an issue where some users may receive an error when accessing files or running programs from a shared folder using the SMBv1 protocol. The error is "An invalid argument was supplied". Addresses an issue that causes Task Scheduler tasks configured with an S4U logon to fail with the error "ERROR_NO_SUCH_LOGON_SESSION/STATUS_NO_TRUST_SAM_ACCOUNT". Addresses a performance issue with Windows Mixed Reality on some laptops with hybrid graphics adapters, such as Surface Book 2. Addresses an issue that blocks Folder Redirection for AppData\Roaming. The Event 502 message, “The folder is not redirectable.” appears. Addresses an issue in which Wi-Fi credentials must be entered each time a device restarts and tries to reconnect to Wi-Fi using Group Policy-distributed Preferred Network Profiles. If you installed earlier updates, only the new fixes in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.......That was my problem

Many people are not aware that you can still "free update" from earlier versions, but the option still exists..

This ex-Win7 laptop was upgraded recently, but as it is a smaller machine I need to add RAM etc, to make it run better..

Methods and links are listed in my post below this one ..

Special Build New Desktop with LG Monitor - and Toshiba Laptop with Windows 7.1 (now upgraded to Windows 10)

Windows 10 64bit  and Windows 7.1 Laptop (upgraded to Windows 10) - Always Fully Updated

Follow the cnet link and it includes the same directions listed here ..

Windows 10 free download: How to get the upgrade now
Microsoft no longer supports Windows 7. If you haven't upgraded to Windows 10 yet, follow these simple steps now.

Here's how to get Windows 10 for free, if you're currently running a licensed and activated copy of Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 Home or Pro:
1. Go to the Download Windows 10 website.
2. Under Create Windows 10 installation media, click Download tool now and Run.
3. Choose Upgrade this PC now, assuming this is the only PC you're upgrading. (If you're upgrading a different machine, choose Create installation media for another PC, and save the installation files.)
4. Follow the prompts.
5. When the upgrade is complete, go to Settings Update & Security > Activation, and you should see a digital license for Windows 10.

I just want to add that I have installed windows 10 21H1 over win 7 on 2 laptops and 3 desktops.

One laptop was really not ideal and is slower now. Whereas the other (an I7) is screaming fast.

Similar mixed experiences with desktops. 32 GB ram seems to be the sweet spot for speed with the less ideal MOBO and older processors.

Here is a little record of those....

On a fresh, superfast build, with win 10 1904 installed, when I upgraded to 21H1, I lost jump menus on the taskbar. But she remains superfast.

I have not solved the jump menus yet :( If not fixed with 21H2, I will fresh install... I have done a non distructive repair reinstall and DISM / SFC. Reset menus... No luck.

Processor   AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor
MOBO  Asus TUF GAMING X570-PLUS (WI-FI) ATX AM4 Motherboard

Installed RAM    48.0 GB
System type    64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

This old desktop is ok, but I bet 32 GB would be far better!

Processor    AMD FX™-6300 Six-Core Processor                3.50 GHz

MOBO   Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3P ATX AM3+ Motherboard

Installed RAM    16.0 GB
System type    64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

This desktop is a borderline one and is slower now, also think 32 GB would make it nice.

Processor   Intel Pentium G850 2.9 GHz Dual-Core Processor

MOBO    MSI H61M-P31 (G3) Micro ATX LGA1155 Motherboard

Installed RAM    16.0 GB
System type    64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

Whereas this desktop is a super capable workhorse and I think would easily speed up with 32GB

Processor    Intel Core i7-4820K 3.7 GHz Quad-Core Processor

MOBO      MSI X79MA-GD45 Micro ATX LGA2011 Motherboard
Installed RAM    16.0 GB
System type    64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
