I think we are actually almost exactly on the same page here.  I have from time to time (and now provoked by "misbehavior" of the Spotlight feature) run::

   DISM /online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Restart from the main menu submenu

   sfc /scannow

Restart from the main menu submenu

I am quite prepared to believe the "cold boot" restart resulting from shutdown -r -t 0 might be preferable to the "hot restart" I have been using, and to change my practices accordingly.

In the meantime, as a lifelong experimental scientist, I am curious to discover whether or not the DISM/sfc procedure has actually "repaired" the Spotlight function.  I can't see that this experiment carries any risk at all.

I do not know if you use the lock screen by default to manually log into your desktop computer, but I automatically log into my desktop-only computer.

But anyway, whenever need be, it is easy to change the Windows Spotlight images by pressing Win + L, and click "I do not like" or vice versa, and I have decided to do that more often.

Good luck! :)

Yesterday, when I turned on my desktop-only computer, I interestingly noticed that my Windows Spotlight image had changed again to a new beautiful image of an American red desert in two states, (but as busy as I was, I did not note its name).

As such, I just realized what MajorGeeks means by "For those who aren't aware, Windows Spotlight can display different images every day and offer suggestions from the lock menu."

If one interacts with Windows Spotlight, it can change to a new image of a similar category every day (for example beautiful nature photographs).

But otherwise, it will just change to other new or already used images of different categories within a few days, and sometimes even get stuck on the same image.

I am speaking of 8 years of a rather boring experience with no interaction with Windows Spotlight, but I am certain that the next 2 years will be a lot more exciting.

Good luck! :)

Thanks for this.  I have unwittingly used that approach by "not liking" the photo of Bruges (in Belgium) to get out of a stuck image cycle.  So far I have not tried to manipulate the available categories of images -- I had not realized that was possible.  The latest shift (today) brought me back to toucans again, after several interesting photos I had NOT seen before.  Being by profession and lifelong habit an experimental scientist, I'm inclined to let things run a while longer to see if I'm still stuck on a limited set of images or not.  If I am, I suppose the next step is the one suggested in Post #2 etc.  I am a biologist, with serious interests in many other fields, including art and architecture.  I have traveled widely and thus seen in real life many of the landscapes, buildings and art works that appear in the Spotlight images.  My first inclination is therefore NOT to try to restrict the Spotlight to any particular category of images, but instead to take what comes, in the hope of learning new things I wouldn't necessarily have thought of myself.

You are welcome, saluqi! :)

Yes, and to avoid manipulating the Windows Spotlight image categories, you should not click "I like" on any images you like, because Microsoft points out that that is exaxtly what happens if you do.

With all due respect, I daresay that you have many great interests and that you have an exciting life! :thumbup2:

Good luck! :)
