Thanks for the feedback.

 

I understand your frustration with Windows 10. BUT the issues you describe with your Windows 10 device are completely fixable by changing some settings. It will, however, be too confusing to troubleshoot two different computers in one topic.

I respectfully suggest sticking in this topic with the Windows 8.1  computer at hand, if you are determined to invest time and effort to fix this older machine running an obsolete, insecure, apparently corrupted OS.

 

BTW You did not answer the question – is the computer in this other topic the Win 7 computer, the Win 8.1 computer discussed here in this thread here and now, or the Win 10 computer?

If it *IS* the same Windows 8.1 laptop we are discussing here in this thread, then you may be facing (impending) hardware failure, especially if it is > 5 or 6 years old.  And it sounds as if the repair install did not work.

 

Trying to repair the OS if the hardware is failing may not succeed. But, as always, it’s entirely up to you.

 

PS  I understand your favorable opinion of and comfort with Windows 7, too. BUT Win7 is an even more obsolete, insecure OS. At some point, we all must move on to newer hardware running a more modern, more secure Windows version (or move to Linux).  Operating unpatched computers in today’s threat environment is quite risky. Doing so requires a significant level of computer expertise in order to minimize vulnerability and to have at least a rudimentary plan for disaster recovery. Without those, you face a real risk of data loss, financial loss and/or identity theft.  But it is certainly your choice. I’ll dismount my soapbox and wish you well. Cheers and Good Luck!

I tried the Repair again and this time I got to the same screen,and now its asking me to "insert media" I have a laptop (so I dont have any media to insert ) surely the laptop should be looking at the recovery partition for the files ?!

So,where can I get/download this media from ? ( I take it that it wants a Win 8/8.1 DVD )

 

@ Moxie Momma:

I am talking about the same Win 8.1 laptop that I mentioned.As far as virus/threats  loss of data etc go.I am willing to take that risk because I have not had any problems like that from Win 7 to right now.

As for my options ( or lack of ) on the Win 10 PC If you could help me get with those it would be much appreciated.

@ FreeBooter,

Thank you very much,the advice you gave me fixed my problem on my laptop.FTI though,it may be helpfull to know that although 90% of my files/data was ok I did lose 9 apps,so if anyone else tries this,be aware that it does repair your PC but it is a good idear to backup anything important first.

I will also mention that I didnt lose anything that can not be replaced quite easily.

Please post a screenshot of the dialog window when it appears and/or copy all of the relevant information about EDITION (Home or Pro), Version and Build, as explained earlier.

 

Also: "Latitude" does not help us much. If you can please provide the exact model name/number, that would be most helpful.
