...the other unmentioned Chrome type browser.

You are certainly being mysterious, but it seems there is now an even more advanced Chromium browser for Vista than the one I pointed out earlier in this thread:

I may look into that further; and possibly try the zipped file.

Hi Abzyx:

That GitHub page says the supermium browser is a "Chromium fork for Windows Vista (extended kernel), 7 and 8.x. " I don't think it will run on a "plain vanilla" Vista SP2 machine patched to end of support on 11-Apr-2017 that  does not have the extended kernel functions of win32's Windows Vista Extended Kernel installed.

Hi Imacri:
Im afraid you didnt read my link very carefully. It says Windows Vista is now supported, at a level of SP2 (extended kernel not required anymore). Since you still regard yourself as an authority on Vista, why dont you test it yourself? Why are you still recommending a browser based on 2019 Firefox code in 2023? I fail to see the significance of 11-Apr-2017 when Windows Update hasnt worked for more than 3 years now. I wouldnt be surprised if the browser requires SHA-2 (his extended kernel certainly did), but the link doesnt mention that and like you, I havent actually used Vista in years.

The link ref'ed in post #16, https://github.com/win32ss/supermium/releases/tag/v119

Useless because "Assets" part of the page will not load into display.    I have tried in four different browsers ON THE VISTA machine.  Description on the forum was nice but if page not finish loading using the laptop Vista machine, then the link is not usable.   May be the long way to download from the page using W10 put onto flashdrive, take to the Vista machine, open file and unpack/install;  maybemaybemaybe much later.

You are correct cafejose! GitHub is a prime example of a website that does not support obsolete browsers. A fellow named wither 3 running Vista x64 reported downloading Supermium at another forum recently, but Im sure he used a 360 browser based on Chromium 86. If that is not your unnamed Chromium browser, then you better use your Windows 10 PC to download files from GitHub!

Now the zip file of Supermium is unpacked into my User's folder.  I find within the set of directories in the main unpacked folder, Chrome folder and inside this there are chrome.exe and chrome_proxy.exe.  Does which I choose matter?  What is the meaning for the chrome_proxy.exe file?  I am ASSUMING I should double click the chrome.exe file but I am first asking in case the choice is important; or what do the two different files mean?

The following link might help to answer your question. You are now the closest thing to a Supermium expert at BC AFAIK! My old Vista hardware died a few years ago, and Imacri obviously has not used the browser either. I am interested to hear how it works for you!

So far unpacked, and...  I chose to double-click on the "chrome.exe" file.  I later visited Google, and signed in to YouTube service.  Loading time seems shorter, and except for the outdated or incomplete panel on the left-side, most things look normal; exact details I do not know yet but appearance seems normal.

How the signed-on page looks, is this (image file attached to posting):

I would not call me as an "expert" on this browser on W. Vista.  That would be a very large exaggeration.

Kudos to cafejose for successfully using a browser based on Chromium 119 on Windows Vista! Your Vista is 32 bit, correct? Someone at another forum has already reported success on unmodified Vista x64, so this is quite an interesting development!

Ill bet that cryptodan cannot even download the browser from GitHub using a version of Chrome that is nearly 8 years old. (Signing in at Google websites is not the only difficulty that legacy browsers may face on todays internet.)

I'll try tomorrow since I'll be on my computer checking on my unemployment.

And I downloaded it from GitHub.com on Google 49 Chrome.

I was not able to do that.  Exact differences for why, I can not say.  My W. Vista laptop is that 32-bit.

Mine is 64bit and I had to view the page source to gain access to the assets under the drop down menu.
