Slow Computer?

Read the tutorial and every step I was able to check off and also the tips given-I have my
self covered on almost every front-I do not have a firewall because the 2 times I tried utilizing them I could not control them and programs that I use daily i.e. Webshots, were partially or completely blocked. I could not resolve that issue. Even reading the Help menus that come with the program
seemed to help -What would you recommend for someone who needs a simple VERY user friendly Firewll-Also The Scan disk - What exactly is that and where could I pull up a step by step to utilize this function.I now have Spysweeper( latest edition-Paid sub.) Spybot S&D, and Iolo Virus scanner that comes packaged with System Mechanic 7 pro and all say clean and green ( I use them one at a time when checking my system and that is usually after I have been online for a couple of hours ) I use Spysweeper with virus protection continually for protection while online and the others to check readings and with the hope one will catch what the other misses-I do not have them all on at the same time battling each other and negating their usefulness. I have Two internal hard drives and 2 externals and I have plenty of space accoring to my readings and I defrag at least once a week for the internals and once a month for the externals as I do a lot of downloading- Yet and still,my computer is sluggish. My System Mech 7 told me I have 39% system memory. What exactly is it telling me and what can I do to correct it ( I was wondering if this may be the problem as it is the only low reading I get and don't understand ) HELP PLEASE and Thanks for any help in advance!
PS. I have no computer training and RAM &ROM still seem to be just initials. Is that what the low reading is by any chance ? Sure wish I had grown up in a computer generation ! SENT BY, TRYING TO PUT IT ALL TOGTHER ( OR AT LEAST THAT WHAT IT SEEMS LIKE *SIGH* . )

Another name for Scandisk is checkdisk. See the Wikipedia entry:

This is supposed to be an easy to follow guide?!!? I'm sorry but I know next to nothing about working in safe mode, for example - especially performing scans ect.

I have followed your advice and am still having some issues with my computer. I have run Abexo to clean the registry, spybot, adaware. windows defender and virus scan, all seem to find nothing when i run them but virus scan finds weird files on occasion. This is all on my laptop and what has me worried is the CPU fan is cranking away on high all the time. I cant remember for sure but i think it used to run on low or not at all most of the time. I dont run any killer programs on the maching just firefox for the internet mostly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just wanted to say thanks to all who answered my query and my problem has partially been resolved.
I went to Microsoft's web site and downloaded some missing components of my O.S and things have speeded up a lot-Now I will up my Sys. memory and I think that will take care of it. Have a great day !

I have downloaded the tweakguide for XP and making my way through it so that I do not sound like a drunken fool. I want to 'optimize' my system and have downloaded a few things, however, I only have so much free space on my hard drive: like about 17% is available on C and like 65% on E of a total of 19 GB ... I had it upgraded from 98 to XP two years ago.

How much free space should I maintain? and use for all these mantenance programs? in comparison to all else? I try to keep everything that is NOT system related on E and flashdrives since they are pretty inexpensive/ are mobile.

I defrag often, at least weekly ... I usually use Adaware SE and Norton monthly. I ran them yesturday and didn't see any change in performance. I downloaded this Uniblue registry program and when it first ran, found like 1032 problems, after Adaware SE, there were 888 left. Gotta read more about the registry so I know all about that. Am concerned, but as a good friend once said, 'turn the radio up and keep going until it gets louder so you can figure out where it is coming from.'

A few on-going issues I am trying to address:

I get main module error notices often and IF I do not shut everything down and restart my computer, my ISP software will not work afterwards. Then, I have to uninstall/ delete the program and re-install it loosing my address book AND e-mail... I haven't figured out how to recover those which are placed on my desktop in a file for safe-keeping. (I usually delete them because I cannot figure out how to get back into them.) (I have had to re-install my ISP software like more than 20 times in the last 2 years!! (uninstall/ delete/ reinstall each time.) [SP2 doesn't seem to have any impact on this.]

The Win 98 program is still on my HD and when I run disk cleanup ... it shows that these files take up a good bit of space .. can I delete them without harming my XP?

As for my device manager/ DirectX diagnostic tool reports: To me, I seem to have A L O T of stuff my system does not use. I wonder why it using software for somethings when 'equivalent' components are available on the HD. (?) When I ran the device manager, I saw 2 yellow question marks on Other devices and parallel device as well as a yellow shield containing a black exclamation point on the parallel device. I am thinking this has something to do with it trying to install my printer which is already installed.

One little tweak I haven't seen mentioned is turning of the Windows "indexing service". With it turned off, searches may be just a little slower (not by a significant amount), but it saves some memory and speeds disk access.

Another thing I've found helpful is to go to "Administrative Tools" in Control Panel and open the "Services" section. This will give you a list of the background services that run on your computer, their current status, and their startup method. These can be fine-tuned according to your individual needs. For instance, if neither you nor anyone using the computer is disabled, then there is really no reason for the Human Interface Device service to be enabled. So by right-clicking on the entry and choosing properties, this service can be set to "disabled". It will no longer take up any memory. I found that a lot of these are concerned with network functions, and since I'm not on a network, most could be safely disabled.

A word of caution - some of these services have others that depend upon them to function. The dependencies tab of the properties window will list which services the one you're examining depends on, and also which other services depend on it. It may not be catastrophic if you disable a service that nothing else depends on; It will probably be a Bad Thing if you do.

Startup options for these services are automatic, manual, and disabled. Automatic lets the computer decide what it wants to have running and when; manual means that a service won't run until you do something that specifically requires it. Disabled means [Insert crude joke here]. The best thing to do is to try stopping a process first, to see if any Bad Things happen. If not, it's probably safe to set it's startup method to "manual". Be extra cautious before completely disabling anything.

When I first started experimenting* with the Services, I thought that, since I have a DSL connection, I could turn off the "Telephony" service. This is a Very Bad Thing to do. Turning "Telephony" off causes an entire system shut-down, which is probably not what most people would be aiming for. Seems a whole lot of things (like the OS) depend on the "Telephony" Service.

The most noticeable effect I've seen as a result of customizing the Services section is a much faster start-up time. And as I believe was mentioned earlier, it really isn't necessary to have your Firewall, AV program, etc. start when you start the computer. Just remember to start them manually before you start surfing.

I'm not sure I agree with this statement. If you have an internet connection that is always on you can get infected without surfing. I think it is a very good idea to have your AV and firewall start at system boot.

I've seen this type of comment before. So before asking a question about what I think is slowing down my computer, I'll ask this one:

If the "Slow Computer" thread isn't the place to ask questions about a slow computer, then what is?

If you don't know its a hardware, software, or malware problem, then post it in the forum for your Operating System (Windows 95/98/ME/XP/etc.).

Always start your topic in the appropriate forum, not in somebody else's topic.
If it's the wrong forum, a Mod will move it to the proper one.
By starting your own topic, there's a better chance of you getting the help you need.
Having people working multiple problems, in the same topic, quickly gets confusing, for all involved.

Generally speaking, pinned topics in a forum are either for 1) guidance 2) information or 3) notice of updates or revisions to the original topic. Most of the Members who volunteer their time to help other Members would not normally look in replies to pinned topics for problems, so posting elsewhere will assure you of help, and your post would will not get "lost."

Another alternative to this is to take your computer/laptop to your local computer store and pay the fee because they can proffesional speed and clean your computer. Or buy a registry cleaner or system optimiser that is recommended by a computer technician.
