XP - freezes momentarily, and then unfreezes

Eyesee has a good point.

If you have critical data/installed programs on that drive, I suggest that you make an image backup before testing it any further. If that drive suddenly fails you will lose everything.

So the good news it appears for now anyways, is that the cause of those momentary freezes was the CMOS battery. Thanks to help from the other thread, I replaced that battery, which allowed the machine to boot, and we used it for over an hour today and it didn't freeze once! Nevertheless, I have that new hard drive coming, so I'll go ahead and put the new one in anyways, can't hurt. 

Sign of a bad CMOS battery is that the system will lose time when powered off. They last about 5+ years.

No actually, the computer kept time without issue. But for some reason, changing that battery seems to have fixed everything

Due to the age of the System which is 15 yrs old, and 1st Bios was 2011 this system can not handle what you are trying to do.  The OS is corrupted the Drivers are to old, the chip can npt due modern things.

This system should have gone to Linux Years ago.

I still contend that the drive is developing bad sectors. What the poster wants to do is very doable and here is how.

You will need another system running Windows 7 or greater, an IDE/SATA to USB adapter and a SATA to USB adapter and a new drive (preferably Western Digital). Any computer shop should have those. Taking it to a shop will save you from having to purchase them for a one time use like this.

On another system use a SATA to USB adapter to initialize and format the new drive then disconnect it.

Take the old drive out of the system and use an IDE/SATA to USB adapter to attach it to another system. Scandisk will probably run, let it complete.

On the other system download and install Acronis Western Digital cloning tool. I have a system at my shop dedicated for this type of thing.

Attach the new drive and clone the old to the new.

Put the new drive in the system and you are done

I do this kind of thing all the time.

Thanks BC Advisor. It isn't critical that I replicate the existing drive. The machine only has the one program we use it for, and all the project work files for it are backed up to a network drive. So when the new SATA drive comes in a few days, I'll just do a fresh install of XP, and that program and see how things go along from there.
