Slow Computer?

I'm running Windows ME on an old laptop. Anybody know a decent anti-malware program that still supports that OS?

Also, how do you run ScanDisk in ME? And will ScanDisk fix regiustry errors? I usually use Combo Fix for Registry, but it won't run on ME, dern it!

Scandisk can be run by start - programs - accessories - system tools
Another way is to go to my computer - right click on the c drive - properties - tools

Scandisk does not clean the registry. It scans system files for errors

You can run the Windows ScanDisk or you can run the DOS ScanDisk.

Its not easy to run the DOS ScanDisk on WinME because there is no Command Prompt Only in the boot menu (which is a pain in the backside). You have to start the computer up with a bootable floppy disc. At the A:\ prompt depending how your config.sys and autoexec.bat files are setup you could just type in ScanDisk. If you get a bad filename error/file not found type in C:\windows\command and enter at the C:\windows\command command prompt just type in ScanDisk again and let it do a full scan. This will take a while depending on the size of the drive but its faster that Windows full scan. At least with the DOS one you can see the files on the drive and you can see how far it gets. If it find any error just press F to fix them.

No I'm afraid Windows ScanDisk or DOS ScanDisk won't repair the registry. Thats another thing you can restore the registry from DOS just the same as you can with Win98. Just boot it up using the floppy disc and change to C:\windows\command and type in Scanreg /restore. The DOS restore works better that the Windows one.

i cannot believe people still use windows 98, may i ask a simple question......why?

i still use windows 98 because i have a professional audio recording interface that is only compatible with windows 98. to replace it with something comparable and current would cost around $1000 for the sound card alone.

Does it say only compatible with Win98? If not in WinXP there is a compatibilty tab on exe's properties that you can select run as Win95/98/2000/WinNT4.

Well what I used to do with Win9x (doesn't work on WinME because the Autoexec.bat gets re-written everytime its starts up) is add a couple of lines to the Autoexec.bat that used to delete all files in the Windows\Temp folder on startup.

Attrib -h -s -r C:\Windows\Temp\*.*
Echo Y|If Exist C:\Windows\Temp\*.* Del C:\Windows\Temp\*.* >Nul

The first line just sets the file attributes just incase some are hidden, system or read-only so they can be deleted. The second line deletes file without asking.

Obviously if there are folders inside then you could actually use deltree the temp folder as Windows will make a new one when it starts up.

There is an older version of a programme that deletes crap on Win9x but I can't tell you what that is on here?
