This issue can be caused by any of the below possibilities.

1. Not enough hard disk space.
2. Left over programs and bad files.
3. Data Corruption.
4. Missing Windows updates / Outdated drivers.
5. Computer is overheating.
6. Corrupt OS.
7. Bad Hardware.

Edit: removed non pertinent link,

Lots of people think that just because something is New, New, NEW!! it has to be better.

W98SE has problems, but nothing like the kind the newer OS's have. Moreover, most malware these days has switched from targeting the old ones to the new ones. Even more, I have many old apps and games that will NOT work on newer Operating Systems, like the ORIGINAL TweakAll, IconLock and, of course multitudes of still-entertaining DOS-based games.

I gave XP a trial run and detested it. Bells and whistles I didn't need or want, but couldn't get rid of. It glutted my registry with the stuff I didn't want and would never use, which slowed my system down considerably. The "Find" feature was exasperating to use. And it didn't have a proper desktop. I realize that a desktop is a kind of vulnerability, though I lack the expertise to know how this is so. But I don't care! I want a desktop, rather than a series of inane steps I have to go through, as XP had.

I don't mind if a new OS bypasses DOS, but it should STILL have DOS as easily usable as anyone might want.

What bothers me is not that there are newer OSs, but the fact that they are a promotion of "planned obsolescence". I don't like being FORCED to buy new software and hardware, when the older stuff worked just fine.

I now have to have a higher version of Firefox than 98SE supports in order to view most videos. But 98SE can't use them. There's no excuse for closing people like me out - it's a ploy to force people to buy newer stuff.

Why must they come out with a whole NEW OS in the first place? Why not an upgrade? Oh, I forgot - upgrades don't bring in as much cash.

I am probably going to have no choice but to get a new OS, but I'll be darned if I want to promote planned obsolescence. I may use one of the GNU products instead. The newer systems may have more capabilities, but they also have more problems and vulnerabilities. So I'll look for those additional capabilities WITHOUT lining pockets that merely want to extort more money for something I already bought once.

NOW you know why some people persist in using 98SE. If you don't like the reasons, that's your problem.

Sites I've gone to for advice always get snarky when they learn I'm still using 98SE. This site doesn't, and I praise them to the skies for it. It is very off-putting when people use your OS to make "class distinctions."

So once again, THANK YOU, bleepingcomputer!
