What's your Linux desktop look like?

Here is my Kubuntu 14.04 desktop. I like the standard wallpaper enough to have kept it since I installed the OS which was over a year ago now.



This is KDE's Oxygen theme. (KDE is the company that produces Kubuntu). The KDE desktop apps I've added are the weather app which you see at the RHS of the lower panel, showing that my local weather is sunny with a few clouds today, and the black circle which is a lunar app and shows the phases of the moon - look closely and you might be able to see that the right of the circle is slightly brighter than the rest of the circle, as the new moon was only two days ago. The green system monitor display is Conky, which started off as the basic default Conky and I personalised it.

I normally have the top panel (and bottom panel) on auto-hide, but set it to display for the screenshot. Note that top five applications in Favourites in the Start menu are also in the top panel. It was only relatively recently that I organised the favourites section of the Start menu, and also created a desktop shortcut (Ctrl + space bar) to open it. The idea is that I can open the start menu using the shortcut, select an application using the directional arrows on the keyboard, and open it by pressing Enter on the keyboard, faster than I can open the same application by using the top panel with the mouse, but I tend to use the mouse and top panel automatically as I'm now so used to doing so. I created a similar panel in the same position on LXLE (which comes with the LX desktop environment) on my laptop, so whichever computer I'm using I can do the same thing to open the same application. (I'll post a screenshot of my LXLE desktop when my new charger arrives, as the old one broke.)

Another thing I like about KDE is that when I hover the mouse over an icon for an open window on a different desktop, it lights up with a blue border and a picture (or video) appears for a few seconds to show what is in the window.

That's what I was thinking also Nick lol.  Cracks me up - someone with so much knowledge uses the default haha!  It's one of the few things I can do so I go for it big and have like fifteen laying around.  You should try the Lancelot Menu Al000.  If I remember right, the Default don't expand but the Lancelot does as much as you want.  It's Default in Mint in the Toolbar Widgets selections.

Yes it does expand. This is the "Kick-off" menu, the alternative that Kubuntu comes with being something halfway between LXDE/MATE and Windows XP. I'm thinking of replacing my installation of Kubuntu for the 64 bit version, as I recently upgraded the RAM in my computer from 3 GiB to 4 GiB for reasons that are outwith the topic of this thread, so I'll maybe download and try out the Lancelot menu before I do. Thanks for the suggestion.

I will more than likely configure the desktop in the 64 bit version to look exactly like the desktop in my current 32 bit version, unless I figure out how to change the wallpaper by then.

Had to post my new work, thanks to Al000 I have been playing around with my .conkyrc file and have a few iterations saved for different desktop wallpapers.  Here is my new one, again with Lancelot Menu open but not as wide as usual to show conky.  Can you believe I am still using a Square Screen on my 9yr old pc lol. runs like a champ, so far anyway.

With a Core 2 Duo & some TLC for a few years, it may me just midway through it's lifespan, that is, should you learn to do the things that needed (like an interior cleaning), including cleaning the heatsink/fan assembly & reapplying a pea sized drop of thermal paste (Arctic MX-4 is great stuff when on promo at Newegg). And wipe everything clean upon reassembly. If there's lots of dust build up, before reinstalling the heatsink/fan, get a couple cans of Ultra Duster or similar brand (often referred to as 'canned air') & blow things out really good, using short bursts & be sure to be outdoors. 

 

It's the unseen things that goes a long way in determining the lifespan of a computer & the above is one of those. Simple maintenance that should be performed every 2-3 years, tops. If that back cover has to come off for any reason, there's no excuse not to perform these actions. Anyone seeing assistance may always feel free to create a Topic & seek directions for their specific model.

Very neat. I still haven't tried lancelot menu, but haven't forgotten about it either.

@cat1092, I know brother...but as you know I am not feeling well and dreading doing all that.  Wish I felt better as I liked doing things like that in the past, mechanical things you know, cars, motorcycles, boats etc. I love it!

Forget the difference now lol, it's been so long.  But it has a beautiful Bubble like scroll function/graphic while scrolling.  Perhaps the Default has that to I forget.

 

Yeah the Temp thing I was wanting to work on, I do have psensor also, always running, with warnings...and they work.

This is my Windows 7 Wallpaper, yes I'm in denial.

Why do we have a Windows desktop in the Linux section? In future all Windows desktop screen shots are to be posted in the Jokes section, Because that's what Windows is becoming, A joke.

 

As punishment PcPunk must clean the BC staffroom for 6 months and don't forget to stock the fridge with beer and cupcakes, The cupcakes are for me.

@PCPunk #43.  Nobody said anything about you possessing beer and cupcakes. All you have to do is supply the staff room fridge. It's quite simple - I like beer and Nick likes cupcakes !
