Dan:

We hear you. But you are only one data point out of millions. "One anecdote does not research make".

If their hp instaink was so bad they wouldn't be offering it at all. That right is proof. Why should I go shell out a hundred dollars in ink costs when I can spend as I print 10 pages or more and be rest assured my ink is 100% approved and won't cause me even more damage like with cheap poorly made ink offered by generic vendors.

Okay, do you want another anecdotal story x 10,00 or more? Go Google the OfficeJet 8000 series. I had one for 6 months before the print head died. This was a very common problem. They wanted $185.00 or something in that range for a new print head. And this was not an economy-priced printer. I believe they retailed for about $CAD 400.00.

Thousands of people complained about this in their forums and on the Web. Nothing was done.

Ah, another thrilling episode of "The Printer Wars".

FWIW computer forums generally are NOT flooded with topics about computers, printers or other peripherals that just work.

But I will attest to the trouble-free use of a series of HP Officejet AIO printers over many years. My current Officejet 9015e was a breeze to install (LAN for desktop, wifi for laptop), works great, and prints great under daily use. And - despite having an extended warranty - I have not needed HP support in many years.

And this is WITHOUT their "Instant Ink" or "HP Smart", which I do not need.

Like Dan, I buy only HP ink, as it's not worth being penny-wise and pound-foolish to save a few dollars amortized over the life of the printer.

Since the OEM printer manufacturers make their $$ from the ink/toner, not the hardware, it's certainly their prerogative to discourage use of generic, off-brand, cheap replacement.

If one objects to that idea in either principle or practice, then there are certainly many other brand options. :)

Different strokes (of the printer cartridge <pun intended>) for different folks.

Just read on reddit that one potentional fix was a continuous ink supply system for that series of printer. I've seen setups in my places of work like that.

Just to be clear I'm not an hp fan boy nor am I employed by them. I've heard of issues with certain hp printer series, and I stay clear of them. I stay clear of Canon, Lexmark, Epson, and Brother due to the issues I've seen in my 22 years of pc support and community oriented free support.

Of course, as we all agree, it depends on model/product line.

However, some of the garbage stunts that HP pulled in the last few years are illegal. Yet they are not prosecuted for it.

I can't remember the name of the law in the U.S. (just that it's two names hyphenated) that dictates that you can't prevent a person from modifying a product or using it in different and novel ways, no matter how much it affects your revenues.

For example, when John Deere claimed that their farm vehicle owners had no right to do certain repairs, the court slammed that down, as they should have.

Right to Repair one of the many reasons I own android, but all my devices are insured and the deductible on my phone is 200 for overnight replacement or upgrade if no longer available sane with all my devices connected to my internet.

But I consider using generic high risk behavior. In my previous example my print head was completely seized up couldn't even remove it from the printer chassis. So it woukd gave been about 200 plus parts to fix it.

I generally don't use generic ink either, though some ink is high quality and just fine.

The known issue I reported earlier with the Office Jet 8000 series was WITH genuine HP ink. They were just garbage quality printheads.

With less serious inkjet problems people have brought to me, I just used alcohol or similar to clean out the heads. It all depends on a number of factors.

This printer https://www.orgprint.com/en/printers/CANON/BJC/5000-id1653 is another reason why I don't use or recommend Canon. The printer would quit printing at 50% ink level and eventually stopped accepting ink despite the alcohol cleanse of the pinter head. Also their windows drivers from windows 3.11 to windows 2000 was lacking. I had issues with hp software on windows Vista but I blamed Vista fir that.

Right, again, model-dependent. Can we not beat this horse to death further, please.
