Install a fresh Windows on the new desktop and insert the Windows key. AFAIK.

The key won't work cause it's already activated to a computer and a Microsoft account.

It a Retail and not an OEM. Transferable for a life time.

But yes it can't be used on two active desktops at the same time - only one desktop is allowed at a time.

When you make a significant hardware change to your device, such as replacing the motherboard, Windows 11 might no longer be activated.

Make sure you associate your Microsoft account to your digital license to prepare for hardware changes. The association enables you to reactivate Windows using the Activation troubleshooter if you make a significant hardware change later. For more info, see Reactivating Windows after a hardware change .

"My dad has a digitally activated Microsoft Windows 10 Professional 64-bit retail user license being linked to his Microsoft user account."

Assuming this is an actual Retail not OEM.

"1. Windows Retail License (also called Full Packaged Product)

A Windows 10 Retail license refers to the license that you acquire when purchasing a copy of Windows 10 from Microsoft store or an authorized retailer. If you have a Windows 10 Retail license, you can transfer it to another computer, as long as you deactivate the old device. There is no limit on hardware.

2. Windows OEM License

OEM is short for Original Equipment Manufacturer. When original equipment manufacturers produce computers, they always pre-install OEM Windows before selling them. When you buy these PCs, you will get a Windows OEM license and don’t need to pay extra money.

It seems that the Windows 10 OEM license does not cost you money, but actually its cost is already included in the computer cost. Despite this, it is still cheaper than Windows 10 Retail license.

The Windows 10 OEM license is customized for OEM Windows 10 users. Once it is first activated in the OEM PC, it is locked to the hardware. The product key isn’t transferable and you can’t use it to activate another installation."

They have gotten stricter with their licenses activating windows 11 on a machine that it wasn't previously on will deactivate it.

Windows 10 key is no longer valid as it's been upgraded to a windows 11 digital license.

Thank you, 0lds0d and cryptodan! :)

So, I think I can infer from all your insightful replies that my dad, in his current situation, must purchase a new Windows 11 Professional 64-bit retail user license and link it to his Microsoft user account.

He has already used the Media Creation Tool to create a Windows 11 bootable installation USB 3.0 8GB Flash Drive or larger. :thumbup2:

Thank you, and Good night! :)

It even officially says on the How to Get Windows 11 for Your Compatible PC - Microsoft website the following, and from there, I quote:

"Want Windows 11 on your custom-built PC? Whether installing Windows on your custom PC or building a new one, you may need to purchase a license to run Windows 11."

My dad is still waiting for all his hardware components to arrive before starting the assembly, but he will perform a clean install of Windows 11 on his new desktop computer build in due time.

Meanwhile, he will try to manually back up his former 1TB (IIRC) Kingston NVMe M.2 SSD by using an NVMe M.2 SSD to USB 3.0 adapter and save the backup for later use and retrieval. :thumbup2:

Thank you! :)

My dad bought a new digitally activated retail user license for Microsoft Windows 11 Professional 64-bit Norwegian and eventually started assembling his new desktop computer build. But it is a lot of work.

He is now assembling the various internal hardware components in the correct order, and with his 34 years of personal computer experience and building thereof, I think it will go smoothly.

I would say that having the necessary skills to assemble a desktop computer is somewhat advanced, but I do NOT have such, so I will likely purchase my next Windows 11 desktop computer pre-built.

However, I know that doing that would cause me to instead use an OEM user license for Windows 11, but that would NOT make any real difference because I do NOT upgrade my computer anyway.

Thank you! :)

Assembling a PC is like putting a puzzle together.

My first PC had nothing integrated into the motherboard but the keyboard, mouse, printer, and com ports. Everything required a separate card like modem, network card, sound card, video card, and other cards as needed such as usb ports and additional drives since a computer could only have 3 extra hard drives and an optical drive.

Thank you, cryptodan! :)

When I was a teenager, my dad, born in 1943, had an older work colleague who was almost retired and only worked part-time.

Sometimes, my dad allowed me to use his colleague's Intel 8088 desktop computer with a monochrome monitor to play MS-DOS-based games.

I used an all-in-one desktop computer with two 5.25" floppy drives, specifically, the left with MS-DOS and various software and data files on the right in elementary school.

I used desktop computers with MS Windows 3.0 in middle school and high school.

In 1995, I purchased my first Intel 80486 100MHz desktop computer with MS Windows 3.11 For Workgroups 16-bit.

But, I did NOT acquire a modem to use the Internet on my computer because I thought it was enough to use it online on the computers in school.

In 2005, I bought my second Intel Pentium 3.2GHz desktop computer with MS Windows XP Professional 32-bit and started using the Internet and various Antivirus Suites.

In 2015, I purchased my third INTEL Core i7-6700K 4.0-4.2GHz LGA1151 CPU desktop computer with MS Windows 10 Professional 64-bit, and it still works properly after eight years.

Here is a list of its various hardware components, but it is now 03:27 AM here, and as such, Good night! :)

How goes?

I hope your Father is doing the new build, and everything is going smooth and with no snags.

Best regards.
