I received an associates at DeVry Tech each in programming, electronics, logic design. It's been many years (1990) since I've done any programming. I learned COBAL, Fortran, and assembly language on the old TI Pro. But, alas, I've forgotten 75% of it. If don't use it, you lose it. I have a Seagate Barracuda that I can use to load the Linux so I can kick the tires. If you don't mind helping this old dog learn new stuff, can you point me in the direction of where to find what I need to get started. Sounds very interesting and challenging. I know absolutely zip about Linux.

I don't know what sort of computing power or specs would be needed for heavy-duty programming.
And I'm not a Linux person, myself.
So, I'm not sure if Linux would meet your needs.

There's an entire BC forum section here, including pinned topics & guides.

Thanks for that. It will get me started at least. The assembly language was self-taught, so I should be able to pick up Linux with some effort.

I mainly use a PC nowadays for general use. I no longer need a larger, faster, powerful, as I used to need. But I have to try to keep the cost less than $250 if possible. Mine is just wearing out. Takes a long time for the taskbar load, it times out a lot, and sometimes takes a long time to load my Brave browser. I figure it's gonna crash fairly soon!

My vote, for what little it's good for is the Dell Optiplex that Porthos provided link to for you. It's just barely over your preference of amount allowable.

Linux has many wonderful distros out there that are easy to learn.

Two of the favorites are Mint and Puppy. There is a great Linux section if you would like to post there, plenty of Linux enthusiasts there.

Linux is great except if you are dealing in a Windows environment; most Windows programs will not run on Linux.
But....it's a great OS and easy to learn these days.
