Ever use Adblock which is free? I have used it along with a variety of other ad blockers on my computer but never gave it a thought for my phone.

That's a browser AdGuard is an application that provides phone wide ad blocking services for all apps and connections.

Also has social media tracking blocks all social media buttons are removed.

All my devices and my daughters use it.

According to Android Police, Brave is an adblocker browser for Android which probably explains why I have never been overwhelmed by ads and therefore, never considered a dedicated adblocker.

Doing just that .. I get the impression that there's not a lot to choose between going the Brave, Unlock Origin and AdGuard routes as far using specifically on an Android is concerned.

But there are also unknown unknowns- the ones we don't know we don't know

I have just noticed that there is an Adblock and an AdGuard mentioned in this correspondence. I guess that they are totally independent?

Yes...the Brave App for Android includes Adblock for browser which is enabled by default as explained here.

The adguard is phone wide which blocks ads in all apps on your phone.

Brave uses adblock in the browser its not system wide.

cryptodan explained the difference in a nutshell. If you need a more comprehensive explanation, you may want to read How to block ads on Android, with root and without root.

Downloading a system-wide adblocker for Android from a source other than the Google Play store is generally considered a security conern because Google vets apps for security issues and vulnerabilities as explained here.

Google ultimately owns Android and controls the Google Play store. And although Google allows in-browser ad blocking, it prohibits system-wide ad blockers....This is partially due to security concerns over giving one app access to your other apps and services. But another reason is that app developers rely on ads for the majority of their revenue — and when developers make money, Google makes money.

As a security expert I do not recommend folks to use apps outside the Play Store but in this case I trust cryptodan's recommendation on adguard so it's definitely an option to consider.
