ok, I know how to get ram.  How can I improve GPU numbers?  I have had episodes where everything is slowed down, so I've quickly opened task manager to find one program or another has got my GPU up to 98% or more.  It doesn't last long but, it stalls things.

Imho there is no saving grace for this model.  It has a Intel Celeron J4125 CPU @ 2.00GHz   8gigs of ram - Total memory slots:  2 Used : 2    with on-board Intel UHD Graphics 600 chip  (Not a card, not a GPU)

It would I think share the ram so is why a web page looks like it does when loads.

I know you sell stuff on line but there is webpage making (I used to do) and optimization of pages for load time.  Do not think that is happening on page you were looking at.

Ok why, system would be used for letter writing and school work only.  It is a low, low...... end system with integrated graphics.  Not sure will get a lot out of it....... or value for money spent.

Nope what ya got is what ya live with : Max Ram 8gig in 2 slots as per Spec Sheet for the Intel Celeron J4125 : https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/197305/intel-celeron-processor-j4125-4m-cache-up-to-2-70-ghz/specifications.html

There is no path to expansion.

OK, I get it.  That's why it was cheap.  As long as it does the job, and until it starts acting up again, I'm OK with it.

So, any sense in trying to upgrade the previous computer?  At least it's got proper RAM slots.  I don't do any gaming or video editing. If I can't, I can't.  Just thought it might be worthwhile.

Sadly in the modern world 4 years old equals out of date.

If you overspecced the machine (bigger processor, graphics card, memory) when you bought it then you can extend that to six years or so.

Once you hit the inevitable windows slow down then you should consider linux. Some linux distro's are still fairly light on resources.

The guys over in the linux forum don't bite. I still have a working 32bit machine running linux.

Yeah, I know this stuff gets pretty outdated fairly quickly.  I once told a computer tech I was using a 13 year old machine and she said something to the effect of "Oh My GOD!  I would NEVER use a 13 year old machine!"

Frankly I'm OK with outdated equipment if it performs to my requirements.

OK theoretical question, if I was to put the 1tb HDD back into the older machine [shown above], bearing in mind it has had a total erase done on it and no contains only some storage files, would it be able to boot the machine, go online and download Linux?

Second question, could the SSD out of the new machine be installed in the old one?  I don't think the old one would have a slot for it.

I don't necessarily want do to this stuff, I'm just learning and want to know if I could do this stuff.

Thanks.

No it could not since the OS & boot stuff has been formatted.

Would need to take out the drive in there now and reinstall Windows 10 from here following instructions and a USB drive:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software-download/windows10  then install to the 1TB after getting any files off of it.

Would need to delete during the install any prior System and UEFI Partitions.

May need to go into BIOS and make the 1st Bootable device is USB

This site is a wealth of info on any subject : https://www.howtogeek.com/ . Use the search box exclusively and type what you want to do or info for.

You can download and install Linux to a USB drive if so choose to.

Personal preference is Linux Mint Cinnamon  https://linuxmint-installation-guide.readthedocs.io/en/latest/  to USB

Linux Mint Cinnamon Edition : https://linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=299  Most like Windows. : https://www.linuxmint.com/rel_vera_cinnamon_whatsnew.php

FAQ's plus Minimum Requirements : https://linuxmint.com/faq.php

Less Command Line stuff than others. Check out the videos : https://www.google.com/search?q=linux+mint+cinnamon&client=firefox-b-d&source=lnms&tbm=vid&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjzu4eQ-8L8AhViAzQIHSZ2D8oQ_AUoAnoECAEQBA&biw=1536&bih=671&dpr=1.25

It Comes with Software as well there is tons of Software available : Open Source : https://alternativeto.net/platform/linux/?license=opensource check free and ....

Branded systems Dell/HP/Lenovo use the cheapest parts available and are under powered and under ram.  Need to pay for good systems from them if use them only for warranty.

I do not consider them useful.  These are computers : https://xoticpc.com/   I had my laptop custom built from there and shipped up +duty.

For boxed Computers/parts to build I use : https://www.canadacomputers.com/

Most other stuff : https://openbox.ca/ if have what I am looking for.

(in my signature the Rampage is 2008, The Maximus is 2012 both each to build were over 2 grand at the time).

(Spend big or go home then the thing lasts and remains useful.  WIn10 End of life Oct 2024 has put a limit on them.  I still use them, 2008 can not do real modern games but both are faster then......  Have of course stuck a SSD into each, replaced the video cards 3 x's and each a new PSU and Water cooler.

The 2012 does 4.0Ghz  your system is 2.0Ghz, 2008 is 3.2Ghz Chip's

Difference of buying and usability after years and still kicks ass)

If go to Windows 10 or if dual boot Win10 and Linux this is my suggestion for running Win10.

Install Win10, Disconnect from internet and install your already downloaded Chipset, then SATA then the rest of the drivers and lots of reboots between each.

Then open Settings and go through every Topic and sun -topic and turn off everything do not use and right click stuff in start menu and or apps and uninstall or turn off.

Then I use this : https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/microsoft/open-shell-brings-back-the-glory-days-of-the-windows-start-menu/

Then I use this to Lobotomize Win10 : https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10 can test what you turn off.  Need to go back when Windows Updates and check date of release. If a new one download and save over top then run it and reboot.

Then uninstall by Powershell : https://www.majorgeeks.com/content/page/remove_windows_108_and_8_1_built_in_apps_using_powershell.html

This should give you a nice clean OS that I use.  I do it for speed and looks but you do for ram.

As well autoruns https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/autoruns only turn off stuff.  This is a powerful tool.  If do not know, do not do.

To a extent yes.

Would not at all go low cost on HP/DELL/LENOVO as they are already using the cheapest parts available in bulk.

Sure everyone buys in bulk but not to the extent and not letting people know that the system they are buying is not up-gradable nor has the power to do what they want to do.

Scanning and pictures take a lot of work believe it or not so when all the parts combined do not achieve your goals you gotta think of what does it take to do what I want to do and will want to do 5yrs from now with changing technologies.

As well spending the extra money saves time which is more valuable than ever before.

(personally I have gone to the extreme with what I bought, just stuck my 3 video card into both of these, over 450.00each ) Pays off in the long run with the amount of things can do at the same time or even just reading the news and pages open with out waiting (some part to play on the internet service you buy.  2nd from the top is always a good spot.

As has been mentioned, you could still get useful life out of this machine if you switched to using linux as your OS.

Right, I appreciate that Aldfort and it may come to that but with what we I have done to the machine with the advice of you people so far, it's really smartened up a lot and working satisfactorily.  At this point I'm not prepared to undergo the learning curve for installing and using a new OS if I don't have to.  In the future, yes, perhaps.

So if I've learned anything it's that "ya gotta pay to play".

Especially if you multitask or do any kind of gaming more than solitaire-type games in a browser.
