This is somewhat of a continuation of my previous problem.  I suspect I have incompatible ram on my computer.

MAG z790 Tomahawk mobo

Intel 7  13700kf CPU (no onboard graphics)

Nvidia RTX 4060 GPU

Deepcool LS 720 Liquid Cooler

Samsung 980 pro SSD

My current memory

TForce Vulcan DDR5 32 GB (2x16GB) 6400 Mhz CL32 UDIMM memory

TeamGroup T-FORCE VULCAN 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5 6400MHz CL32 Black 1.35V UDIMM - Desktop Memory - INTEL XMP | Best Buy Canada

At first, the computer would just go into sleep mode when I AFK and 30% of the time I came back and the computer wouldn't wake up unless of hard restarted the computer.  Eventually, this started rarely happening while I was actively using the computer.  Suddenly the computer would just freeze.  Again, I'd have to hard restart to fix it.  Last night this problem became extremely bad.  Suddenly I could only get my computer working 20% of the time and it would immediately freeze.

I have since reformatted windows and it seems stable again.  I have my doubts that I fixed anything as it did freeze once during the windows reformat.  But it's otherwise been very stable.  I have my suspicions that this is just temporary though.

Nope, The RAM is  supposed to be OK for this board.

It's in the MSI's QVL list.

As model number (or SKU) FLBD532G6400HC32ADC0 seen in https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/MAG-Z790-TOMAHAWK-WIFI/support#mem under the Memory by 13th Gen K series.

It does not matter if on M/B list.

It is to fast for the Intel 7  13700kf chip  max ram speed : Up to DDR5 5600 MT/s

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/230489/intel-core-i713700kf-processor-30m-cache-up-to-5-40-ghz/specifications.html

Need to not use XMP, need to set ram speed to under 5600 if want to run XMP.   While in there set the timings and lock in.

Make sure BIOS is running HA   Release Date : 2024-01-29

- Update microcode. - Improve memory compatibility.  https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/MAG-Z790-TOMAHAWK-WIFI/support

Okay, so I updated the bios after it froze again and I barely got it working.  Do you think my delayed reaction on this problem may have damaged some of the components in the computer?

I wasn't really sure which version of 5600 frequency to set the memory at.  I think I picked the one with "G2" on it.

I haven't had it freeze again since fixing it, but I only just made the fix about 20 min ago.  Although the fact that my computer even turned on is a positive sign given how hard it was before.

It did it again.  Although it seems if I just wait long enough after force shutting it down, it eventually starts, tells me the bios settings have failed then enters me back into the bios.

This is a picture of my bios in the previous memory section.  What stands out to me is that my motherboard seems to think I have memory at the speed of 4800 mhz, I set it to the speed of 5600 mhz and the actual speed on the memory package says 6400 mhz.

First thing, turn off your sleep/hibernate modes. I have seen those cause more headaches than help. There is no reason to even use them anymore since modern units boot up so fast now. Same with screen savers.

Start with the basic analyzers:

Enter Safe Mode and run the computer for a while. If your freezes stop then it is software that is loading and causing conflict.

Perform a clean boot. If your freezes stop it will clue you to what is causing it.

Run Seatools or Gsmart SSD tester (both free). If the problem is a failing drive, they will find it.

Run Memtest on the memory, one stick at a time. If bad memory that will find it.

Turn off XMP if enabled, do not save with Optimized Defaults.

Turn off Fast Boot in BIOS for the same reasons as below :

Turn off MS Fast Start : https://www.windowscentral.com/how-disable-windows-10-fast-startup /11 and WHY !!!

Well think you sold install the Beta BIOS released : 2024-02-27 as it contains all previous versions.

As well : ME Firmware ver: ME_16.1.30.2330 (download) - ME Firmware update SOP to go along with it.

Please Post a "link" of Speccy Report.
Please install Speccy Free : https://m.majorgeeks.com/files/details/speccy.html
Use Custom Install
At the Top Left Corner of Speccy --> Click File and then Click Publish Snapshot Report, a window will popup and Click YES. --> Another popup will appear and then Click "Copy To Clipboard" then Paste that "link" to your next reply in your thread.

Download Minitoolbox from the below link :
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/minitoolbox/
Run the tool and only select the following tick boxes.
-List last 10 Event viewer errors
    -List installed programs
    -List devices
-List users, partition and memory size
Now click "Go" and Copy/Paste and post the output text in your next reply

I'm still getting through the lists, but before heading into work, I figured I'd update you on what I have so far.

seatools passed no issues.

memtest on one stick of memory passed, haven't tested the second yet.

when I tried to launch the boot manager, the screen went black and froze.  I'm going to try again later.  Same with testing the second stick of memory .

output.txt

for minitools is attached.

Did you try safe mode and clean boot yet? Did you turn off Sleep and Hibernate?

Hi, please enlighten us on your BIOS.  Speccy shows running Version :  H.70   Date:    2023-07-10

While your M/B Support Page does not show a H7 being released.

Current Version is it seems a emergency release (as have now seen it on various boards by MSI)

HB2 (Beta )  2024-02-27  https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/MAG-Z790-TOMAHAWK-WIFI/support

Also from the above BIOS Release is : - ME Firmware ver: ME_16.1.30.2330 (download) - ME Firmware update SOP

Would think need to read manual as to BIOS 1st and above links 2nd is my understanding.

The Firmware Update and BIOS Release may fix your issues as the Intel Management is very important when released for a M/B.

Please when citing you Video Card that you use the correct name.  It is a ASUS GeForce RTX 4060

I do not know if is the 8gig or the 8gig Overclocked

So both Support URL's above.  They both have NVIDIA Version 551.6   2024/03/01   and they use 64bit International DCH WHQL drivers.

I suggest keeping a eye out on the correct page as it is not unknown for ASUS to release Firmware Updates for their cards.

@ moment just the Tweak-it program and the drivers as well the VGA Drivers for it are on the Support Page.

As you have not said if you are getting BSOD's (if so your in the wrong forum, ask for this to be moved) or not but I suggest since this is a ASUS Card

to run DDU and then install the appropriate Driver from the page above as outlined difference in drivers as well these are supported.

Okay, just got back from work.

second memory stick tested and passed.

I tried entering boot manager again, I went F11 at restart, selected "samsung boot manager", then it instantly took me to windows rather than letting me select safe mode.

I've tried flashing the bios before, I can try again with the new patch.  last time I selected the flash bios option inside the bios and it just didn't detect the bios USB that came with my computer.

I'll see what I can get working.  Oh and there's no way I'd get the "overclocked" version of the graphics card, unless the store clerk just slipped that in.

Okay bios is updated.  Also, when I changed all those settings for PKShadow inside the bios, some of them were already disabled, and some of them looked like they were labelled something else.  I attached screenshots of my BIOS update as well as the settings changes I made.  Please tell me if these all look good to you?

Also, I would try safe mode again, but I wanna see if it still freezes.  This BIOS update already feels promising.  Before this, my computer was taking longer and longer to boot up, now it's back to booting up instantly.
